Huawei MatePad 11 Review: Great hardware but beware of its software limitations

At only S$698, the MatePad 11 has a 10.95-inch 2K display with a refresh rate of 120Hz for smoother visuals for both work and play. And you can only find 120Hz screens in the likes of Apple iPad Pro and Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 that cost at least S$1,000. However, the MatePad 11 comes with a quad-speaker system, as evident from the four speaker grilles – two on top and two at the bottom. This sound system is said to be designed and tuned by the audio brand Harman Kardon.

You can really hear the solid stereo sound when you play movies on this tablet. With its 120Hz refresh rate, playing games or merely scrolling through websites become as smooth as silk. But in your house or when you are winding down to sleep, the tablet’s screen is gentle to your eyes with its TUV Rheinland Labs certification for minimal harmful blue light emission. This is great for creative professionals who need colour accuracy to edit photos and videos.

Before stocks run out, you will get the Huawei Smart Magnetic Keyboard (S$198) and the 2nd-generation M-Pencil (S$148) stylus for free when you buy the MatePad 11. The keyboard is nice to type and offers two viewing angles for the tablet.

With the Smart Magnetic Keyboard, M-Pencil (2nd-generation) stylus and a mouse, you get the full package with MatePad 11. The MatePad 11 runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, which is last year’s flagship processor.

In the GeekBench 5 benchmark tests, the MatePad 11 achieved a pretty competent score of 919 (single-core) and 3,341 (multi-core). Using Microsoft Office to edit Word documents or Powerpoint presentations is a cinch too. Sharing a video from a Huawei Mate 30 Pro (left) to the MatePad 11 is easy peasy.

On the downside, you will still find many apps missing, such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, in Huawei’s AppGallery. With a 7,250mAh battery, the MatePad 11 is rated at 12 hours of continuous usage on a single charge. In our usual video-loop battery test whereby a 720p video is looped with Wi-Fi turned on and the display at full brightness set at 120Hz refresh rate, the MatePad 11 lasted 7 hours and 20 minutes.

This is pretty average compared to the excellent battery life (11 hours 40 minutes) of MatePad (2021) we reviewed. The Huawei MatePad 11 has really solid hardware but its software is limited by the US-China trade war. There is no doubt the HarmonyOS and AppGallery will continue to grow and gain traction in the coming months and years.

Huawei’s MatePad Pro is a good tablet trapped in an OS war

The Huawei brand has been making inroads around the world, but because of its fraught, often litigious relationship with the US government, the electronics manufacturer hasn’t struck gold in American markets. Coupled with the tablet’s processing power is a user experience smooth as butter, courtesy of HarmonyOS 2.

All the swipes and scrolls are remarkably intuitive to the point that I, a physical home-button devotee, didn’t find the absence of a home button too bothersome. (In fact, its absence is what enables the screen to take up virtually the entire tablet with a gorgeous OLED display.) It won’t work for Snapchat users or vertical-selfie takers: When you look at the screen as you take a pic, it looks like you’re looking up and to the side. Huawei’s website calls the tablet “sleek” and “compact,” and although it’s certainly sleek with a thickness of 6.7mm (just barely thicker than the iPad Pro) and a weight of 609 grams (just barely lighter than the iPad Pro), I wouldn’t call it compact.

But fortunately for those who use their tablets to write, the hybrid keyboard-case, which Huawei says is sold separately “depending on markets,” makes the setup conducive to heavy-duty typing. The pen, whose tip is so razor-sharp it’s mind-blowing that it doesn’t puncture the screen, charges when magnetically attached to the side of the tablet, similar to the Apple Pencil.

The first option under “top-rated apps” is something called “OfficeSuite – Office, PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.” Other options include the Chinese online retailer Alibaba and Spotify competitor Deezer. You might recall the iconic moment from the 2004 teen flick Mean Girls when, after Gretchen Wieners tries to introduce “fetch” as a new slang word for the umpteenth time, queen bee Regina George finally snaps: “Gretchen, stop trying to make ‘fetch’ happen. But just as Gretchen’s “fetch” is a pretty cool term despite its failure to catch on, Huawei’s products themselves deliver on the hardware level.
