Wikipedia

iPadOS is a mobile operating system developed by Apple Inc. for its iPad line of tablet computers. It is a rebranded variant of iOS, the operating system used by Apple’s iPhones, renamed to reflect the diverging features of the two product lines, particularly the iPad’s multitasking capabilities.

It was introduced as iPadOS 13 in 2019, reflecting its status as the successor to iOS 12 for the iPad, at the company’s 2019 Worldwide Developers Conference. The operating system initially had rough feature parity running on the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, with variations in user interface depending on screen size, and minor differences in the selection of apps included.

Standard iPad apps were increasingly designed to support the optional use of a physical keyboard. To emphasize the different feature set available on the iPad, and to signal their intention to develop the platforms in divergent directions, at WWDC 2019, Apple announced that the variant of iOS that runs on the iPad would be rebranded as “iPadOS.” The new naming strategy began with iPadOS 13.1, in 2019.

On June 22, 2020, at WWDC 2020, Apple announced iPadOS 14, with compact designs for search, Siri, and calls, improved app designs, handwriting recognition, better AR features, enhanced privacy protections, and app widgets. On June 7, 2021, at WWDC 2021, iPadOS 15 was announced with widgets on the Home Screen and App Library, the same features that came to the iPhone with iOS 14 in 2020.

The update also brought stricter privacy measurements with Safari such as IP Address blocking so other websites cannot see it. On June 6, 2022, at WWDC 2022, iPadOS 16 was announced with a Weather app[14] and Stage Manager,[15] along with most of the features included in the iOS variant. Unlike previous versions of iOS, the icon grid displays up to five rows and six columns of apps, regardless of whether the device is in portrait or landscape orientation. The first page of the home screen can be configured to show a column of widgets from applications for easy access.

Spotlight Search is no longer part of the widgets but can still be accessed by swiping down from the center of the home screen or pressing Command + Space on a connected keyboard. Double-clicking the Home Button or swiping up from the bottom of the screen and pausing will display all currently active spaces.

In many applications, a notable exception being YouTube, videos can be shrunk down into a picture-in-picture window so the user can continue watching it while using other apps. Sidecar allows for an iPad to function as a second monitor for macOS, named in reference to articulated motorcycles.

iPadOS 15: Everything We Know

Users can bring up Quick Note anywhere to jot down a thought and add links, providing an easy way to get back to exactly what they were looking at. Spotlight now offers web image search and richer results for actors, musicians, TV shows, and movies. FaceTime also supports Portrait mode and offers a new grid view to see more faces at the same time. Users can also generate shareable links to a scheduled FaceTime call, which can also be opened on Android and Windows devices.

There are dozens of tweaks and improvements, such as Universal Control to seamlessly use a single mouse and keyboard across the iPad and the Mac and drag and drop files, features in the Maps app including a globe view and a new 3D experience in cities, all new features for Memories in the Photos app, a system-wide Shared with You feature for highlighting content that has been shared in Messages conversations, a new For All of You row in the TV app to recommend entertainment for the whole household, and more.

Everything You Need to Know

Notifications will now display contact photos for people and larger icons for apps to make them easier to identify. Spotlight also supports web image searches and significantly richer results for actors, musicians, TV shows, and movies.

For businesses that support App Clips, there is an action button on the Maps result in Spotlight. Groups of photos sent in Messages now appear as a glanceable collage or a swipeable stack, depending on how many have been sent.

Apple has redesigned the Weather app’s animated backgrounds to more accurately reflect the sun’s current position and precipitation conditions. The Health app also adds Walking Steadiness as a new metric to help manage fall risk.

COVID-19 immunizations and test results can be stored in the Health app using a QR code from a healthcare provider. Blood glucose highlights now show levels during sleep and exercise, and feature interactive charts.

For shared notes, it is now possible to mention other users to notify one another of updates, and an all-new Activity view shows the recent edit history. iOS 15 also brings quick-access options to easily delete completed reminders, improved natural language support, and expanded suggested attributes such as tags, flags, priority, and more.

In iOS 15, Siri requests are processed on-device using the Neural Engine, increasing security and significantly boosting responsiveness, while also no longer needing an internet connection. Siri is also able to learn about the contacts you interact with most, new words you type, and topics you read about to provide better responses.

You can also make requests to control a HomeKit device at a specific time or under certain circumstances, like when you leave home. Siri offers neural text-to-speech voice in more languages in iOS 15, including Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, and Finnish. Apple has previewed new child safety features that will be coming to its platforms with software updates at an unspecified later date. The company said the features will be available in the U.S. only at launch and will be expanded to other regions over time, including the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

The Communication Safety feature will be coming in updates to iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS Monterey for accounts set up as families in iCloud. iMessage conversations will remain protected with end-to-end encryption, meaning that private communications will be unreadable to Apple. Scanning Photos for Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) Using a new feature, Apple will be able to detect known Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) images stored in iCloud Photos, enabling Apple to report these instances to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), a non-profit organization that works in collaboration with U.S. law enforcement agencies. It will transform this database into an unreadable set of hashes that is securely stored on users’ devices. Apple has not shared what its exact threshold is, but it has an “extremely high level of accuracy” to ensure that accounts are not incorrectly flagged.

The underlying technology behind Apple’s system is quite complex and it has published a technical summary with more details. Expanded CSAM Guidance in Siri and Search Apple will expand guidance in Siri and Spotlight Search across devices by providing additional resources to help children and parents stay safe online and get help with unsafe situations. What’s the Latest Version of iOS for iPhone and iPadOS for iPad?

You can find the installed software version and upgrade to the latest iOS right from your Settings app if Apple still supports your device. Apple releases new major versions of iOS and iPadOS roughly once every twelve months. You can check which version of iOS or iPadOS you have on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch via the Settings app. Your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch may occasionally show a notification telling you a new version of iOS or iPadOS is available, too.

If your device tells you your software is up to date, but you aren’t running iOS 15 or iPadOS 15 yet, you’re probably using an older iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch that Apple is no longer supporting with operating system updates. If you have an older iPhone, iPad, or iPod that isn’t on this list, you won’t be offered iOS 15 on the Software Update screen.

iPadOS 15 new features, and what will change on your iPad

A sister update to iOS 15, the new iPadOS has lots of the features of that iPhone operating system, but with a few extras that make the most of the tablet form factor. Since then, we’ve seen a variety of smaller updates, with iPadOS 15.6 – a July 2022 release – being the most recent. If you’re not yet up to date then head to Settings > General > Software Update to grab the latest available version of iPadOS. Widgets were added in iOS 14, but they were locked to the home screen in a panel on the left… for some reason.

On iPhones you have to swipe to the end of your home screens to get to the app library, but on iPads you can also bring the thing up easily from any page via the dock. It’s not clear how this is different from the current split-screening feature, as the ‘shelf’ or list of apps to swap between when you’re multitasking already exists in prior iPadOS builds. The iOS Notes app has turned into Google Docs, by the sounds of it. One other new improvement is the ability to easily bring up a Quick Note by swiping up on the screen with the Apple Pencil, giving you a way to easily sketch a note or write down an idea.

This app is now coming to iPadOS, so you can convert text and spoken words between languages. FaceTime has a variety of improvements, and the biggest of them is a feature called SharePlay that allows you to listen to songs together over Apple Music or watch TV shows in sync, with shared playback controls.

It’s sort of like Netflix Party, a feature many used during the Covid-19 lockdowns in 2020, but specifically for Apple devices and through the company’s services like streaming platforms. Pus you can move seamlessly between an iPad and a Mac with a single mouse and keyboard, Memories in Photos has a new look and personalized song suggestions, Maps includes new and enhanced details, and there are new privacy and accessibility tools.

This allows you to stream films and TV shows or listen to music while on FaceTime calls, and to have the content in sync for everyone. There’s also a Legacy Contacts feature, which lets you assign someone to get access to your Apple ID, iCloud account and iPad data after you pass away. With iPadOS 15.4, users finally got access to Universal Control, which allows you to connect your iPad to a Mac and use the iPad’s screen like an extension of the Mac’s display, with one keyboard and mouse controlling both devices. There’s not much in iPadOS 15.5, but one change is a new Apple Podcasts setting to limit episodes stored on your iPad and automatically delete older ones. iPadOS 15.6 is another small update, but along with bug fixes it also includes the ability to fast-forward, rewind, pause, and restart live sports games that are currently in progress from the TV app.
