Which iPad do I have? How to tell your iPad generation and model
You can also check whether you have a home button or twin rear cameras to tell which iPad you have. It’s been more than a decade since the iPad first hit the market, and Apple has since released over two dozen different models and “generations.”
Figuring out exactly which iPad model you own lets you know how much storage space you’re supposed to have, which accessories to buy, and how old your device is.
Here’s how to find your iPad’s model number, and use that to check the generation and version.
To quickly see which iPad you have, find this model number and then search for it online or consult the list at the end of this article. Tap Model Number to reveal a short code that starts with the letter “A.”
Underneath the iPad logo, beside the word “Model,” you’ll see a capital letter A followed by a few numbers. That’s the model number, and with it you can search for your specific iPad generation online, or you can just reference our list below. Newer iPad generations will not have a small circular home button at the bottom of the tablet’s face. Apple stopped including the home button on newer iPads when they started using facial recognition technology.
Check out our guide on how to add a virtual home button to your iPhone or iPad screen with Assistive Touch. If you purchased an iPad Pro within the past few years, an easy way to identify the generation is if it has twin cameras.
Newer iPad Pro models have twin rear cameras. Quick tip: The new iPad 10th generation model has also changed the front camera placement to the side of the screen — all other iPads have front cameras on the top of the screen.
You can also press Ctrl + F or Command + F and type in your model number to find it in the tables immediately.
iPad Mini 16GB WiFi White (MD531X-A)

iPad Mini (1st generation)
It was announced on October 23, 2012, as the fourth major product in the iPad line and the first of the iPad Mini line, which features a reduced screen size of 7.9 inches (20 cm), in contrast to the standard 9.7 inches (25 cm). The first generation iPad Mini received positive reviews, with reviewers praising the device’s size, design, and availability of applications, while criticizing its use of a proprietary power connector, its lack of expandable storage, its under-powered Apple A5 chip with 512 MB RAM, and the lack of a Retina display. On the day of the event, Apple CEO Tim Cook introduced a new version of MacBook family and new generations of the MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, and the iMac before the iPad Mini and the higher end fourth-generation iPad.
[11] As well as being discontinued from stores, the iPad mini no longer receives software updates and is not supported by Apple.
[12] It can act as a hotspot with some carriers, sharing its Internet connection over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB,[13] and also access the App Store, a digital application distribution platform for iOS that is developed and maintained by Apple. The service allows users to browse and download applications from the iTunes Store that were developed with Xcode and the iOS SDK and were published through Apple. The iPad Mini comes with several pre-installed applications, including Siri, Safari, Mail, Photos, Video, Music, iTunes, App Store, Maps, Notes, Calendar, Game Center, Photo Booth, and Contacts. The device has an optional iBooks application, which displays books and other ePub-format content downloaded from the iBookstore.
[22] However, some newer features of the software are not supported due to relatively aged hardware that was shared on the iPad 2. While Apple stopping the latest iOS updates for the iPad Mini was expected by many in the industry, it has however led to some criticism, as the device was on sale until June 2015 and by June 2016, no further versions of the operating system beyond iOS 9 were to be made available to the tablet. The iPad Mini is available with 16, 32, 64 GB of internal flash memory, with no expansion option. Apple sells a “camera connection kit” with an SD card reader, but it can only be used to transfer photos and videos.
Apple offers other accessories, including a Bluetooth keyboard, several types of earbuds or headphones and many adapters for the Lightning connector. Reviews of the first generation iPad Mini have been positive,[34][35][36][37][38][39] with reviewers praising the device’s size, design, and availability of applications, while criticizing its use of a proprietary power connector and its lack of expandable storage and Retina display.
[40][43] Joshua Topolsky of The Verge praised the industrial design of the iPad Mini, however panned its lack of Retina display and price.

These older iPad models are too old, now, too underpowered and completely incompatible with any of the current and future versions of iOS/iPadOS. The amount of older, compatible, available apps for these old iPad models has dwindled significantly since the beginning of 2020! Getting older versions of apps for these old iPad models, initially from Apple’s iOS App Store is getting very difficult and very problematic and this issue is getting, painfully, much worse, now, in 2020! As of the beginning of 2019, many, MANY third party app developers are all more quickly and completely permanently dropping older app support for all old 7, 8 and 9-year iPads that are running 2-3 year old and earlier iOS versions ( iOS 10 and earlier ).
These old iPads are now reaching their complete end of life and support. The cheapest, baseline 2019, 10.2 inch screen 7th gen Apple iPads have a 1/2 inch larger retina screen, newer, more powerful and nearly 2-1/2 times faster 2.3 Ghz, A10 Fusion processors, AT LEAST, 3-4 times the internal RAM, with the 2019, 7th gen iPad having 3 GBs of internal RAM, iPadOS 13 support, with much better and improved multitasking features, Apple Pencil and Apple Smart keyboard cover support and have better audio speakers and better/improved built-in cameras.
