Ipad Mini History

The first-generation iPad Mini was announced on October 23, 2012, and was released on November 2, 2012, in nearly all of Apple’s markets. The iPad Mini 2, with a A7 processor and a Retina Display, was announced on October 22, 2013 and released on November 12, 2013. The iPad Mini 3 was announced on October 16, 2014 and was released on October 22, 2014 alongside the iPad Air 2; it features the same external hardware as the Mini 2 and the addition of a Touch ID fingerprint sensor compatible with Apple Pay. Matching the new design language of the current Pro and Air iPads, features included a larger 8.3-inch full-screen display, USB-C port (instead of Lightning), top button with Touch ID (with home button removed), and support for the second-generation Apple Pencil.

[7][8] The company did not give the subject of the event, but it was widely expected to be the iPad Mini. [9] At the event, Apple CEO Tim Cook introduced a new version of MacBook family and new generations of the MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, and the iMac, then unveiled the fourth-generation iPad and the iPad Mini. The iPad Mini comes with several pre-installed applications, including Siri, Safari, Mail, Photos, Video, Music, iTunes, App Store, Maps, Notes, Calendar, Game Center, Photo Booth, and Contacts. [11] Like all iOS devices, the iPad can sync content and other data with a Mac or PC using iTunes and to Apple’s iCloud online service.

Although the tablet is not designed to make telephone calls over a cellular network, users can use a headset or the built-in speaker and microphone and place phone calls over Wi-Fi or cellular using a VoIP application, such as Skype. The device has an optional iBooks application, which displays books and other ePub-format content downloaded from the iBookstore. On June 8, 2015, it was announced at the WWDC that all four generations of the iPad Mini would support iOS 9. The iPad Mini is available with 16, 32, 64 and 128 GB[a][22]) of internal flash memory, with no expansion option.

Apple sells a “camera connection kit” with an SD card reader, but it can be used only to transfer photos and videos. Apple offers other accessories, including a Bluetooth keyboard, several types of earbuds or headphones and many adapters for the Lightning connector. Reviews of the first generation iPad Mini have been positive,[37][38][39][40][41][42] with reviewers praising the device’s size, design, and availability of applications, while criticizing its use of a proprietary power connector and its lack of expandable storage and Retina Display for the first-generation iPad Mini. [43][45] Joshua Topolsky of The Verge praised the industrial design of the iPad Mini, however panned its lack of Retina Display and price.

[42] The iPad Mini 2 was well received, praising the Retina Display and Apple A7 chip performance, with criticisms on the price increase and the quality of the camera.

iPad mini

One year later, in 2013, the company gave this iPad a minor upgrade with the A7 processor and a Retina display. When everyone thought Apple wouldn’t launch another iPad mini, the company released the fifth generation in March of 2019.

This was the most significant update for the mini line at the time, with a major processor upgrade and the first-generation Apple Pencil support.

Now with Touch ID on the upper button, a larger display with thinner bezels, A15 Bionic, better cameras, and new colors

With the powerful A15 Bionic processor, Apple claims it’s 80% faster than the previous model, making it the most capable iPad mini ever. Users also get 64GB and 256GB storage options and a new USB-C port, allowing faster connectivity and cellular models with 5G bringing more flexible mobile workflows. With a new 12MP Ultra Wide front camera and Neural Engine, users can enjoy even more engaging video calls. Center Stage makes video calls more natural in FaceTime as well as third-party video-calling apps. This iPad also brings for the first time support for the second-generation Apple Pencil, also attaching to this tablet’s side.

Although many people praised the new iPad mini, some customers started noticing a “jelly scrolling” bug. This operating system brings a redesigned Home Screen with widgets and App Library support. New automation triggers based on the current reading of a HomeKit-enabled humidity, air quality, or light level sensor

One of the most notable changes here is a fix for a Safari vulnerability that may have been leaking your browsing history and Google ID data to the websites you visited. Different from other software updates, iPadOS 15.5 only improves the Podcast app experience, as Apple focused on Wallet changes for the iPhone this time: Apple Podcasts includes a new setting to limit episodes stored on your iPhone and automatically delete older ones TV app adds the option to restart a live sports game already in progress and pause, rewind, or fast-forward. Fixes an issue that may cause Braille devices to slow down or stop responding when navigating text in Mail. In our sixth-generation iPad mini review, we praise its versatility to be used as a powerful device while still compact enough to read a book, use social media, and keep it anywhere near you. For example, it’s a wonderful reading device because of its large screen and lightweight, balanced design, but it suffers due to the lack of ProMotion.

Release Dates, Features, Specs, Prices

Customers who favor the small tablet can purchase this model with confidence, knowing that its design and performance won’t become outdated for years to come. The 8.3-inch Liquid Retina Display is longer and skinnier than the previous models, so viewing 16:9 video content is better suited with less letterboxing. The sixth-generation model has a 12MP sensor with True Tone flash, Smart HDR 3, and 4K video recording.

Users can expect data transfer rates of about 5GB/s when connecting peripherals like an external SSD. The 5G modem included in the cellular version enables sub-6GHz networks, but not the ultra-fast mmWave 5G found in football stadiums and other public venues. USB-C, the A15 processor, and all the design changes bring the iPad mini even higher in Apple’s product lineup.

Due to these changes, the base price increased by $100 to $499, putting it closer to the $599 iPad Air and further away from the budget $329 model. It uses Apple’s A12 Bionic chip, 3GB of RAM, an upgraded 7.9-inch Retina display with True Tone, and an improved front-facing camera.

Users could make HD FaceTime calls for the first time thanks to the higher-resolution selfie camera.

Customers seeking older models will still find the 5th-generation iPad mini a decent choice. Despite the increase in length and width, the iPad mini 4 was 33.2 grams lighter than the previous model and a full millimeter thinner. This model also saw hardware upgrades, including Apple’s dual-core A8 chip, 2 GB of RAM, and a fully laminated display.

The iPad mini 4 was discontinued in March of 2019 but had received high praise from most major tech outlets during its three-and-a-half-year run. The device received fewer upgrades between generations than its predecessor had, providing almost the same hardware as the previous model. At the first model’s unveiling, Apple’s Phil Schiller said it was the company’s goal to help customers “find even more uses for iPad, to use it in places and ways they never imagined. The larger model eventually borrowed the small tablet’s slimmer design the following year, when Apple debuted the iPad Air.

That feature is still a primary selling point today, with much of Apple’s PR showing people holding the device in one hand. If anything, it is more emphasized than ever with the all-screen display and Apple Pencil support transforming it into a handheld notepad. Unlike Apple’s other products, which have gone through multiple display size alterations and form factor updates, the iPad mini has clung to the 5.3-inch width and near 7.7-inch height.

A history of the iPad Mini, from life to limbo

Reports suggest that Apple will once again skip releasing a new iPad Mini in the fall event, indicating the product line is likely dead. Apple is expected to unveil a new suite of products in September, with the conventional wisdom emerging that we’re going to see three iPhone models. But the original report, in its final paragraph, added that Apple will not be releasing a new iPad Mini this year.

The lack of noise about a new version would seem to indicate that, even if it hasn’t been formally killed off, the product has at least fallen out of favor within Apple.

Also indicating this is the arrival, earlier this year, of a new 9.7-inch entry-level iPad that is not part of the Mini category, but is priced at $329. The original iPad arrived in 2010, and in its early years the product often competed with tablets that were smaller than its 9.7 inches.

Starting at $329 for the 16GB, Wi-Fi-only version, the first iPad Mini — like all models for the entire line’s life — had a 7.9-inch screen. We rated it 4.5 out 5, praising “thin sturdy construction,” compact size, easy setup and use, and “very good camera,” while criticizing the lack of a full Retina Display.

It was unveiled at a San Francisco keynote in October 2013 — the same event that saw the debut of the iPad Air — and hit the market November 12. In our review, AppleInsider called the second iPad Mini “an impressive technical achievement, but one that comes at a greater cost to customers. “Frankly, we feel the relatively premium pricing on the Retina iPad mini is worth it, though Apple does get dinged for being considerably more expensive than the competition.” The third-generation device was introduced at the same event as the iPad Air 2, as well as a new iMac and the release of OS X Yosemite and the Apple Watch app development kit.

The Mini 3 maintained the A7 chip, the Retina Display, the 1.3 GHz dual-core Apple Cyclone CPU and the Quad-core PowerVR G6430 GPU, as well as the 1024 MB LPDDR3 RAM from the second generation. In our review, AppleInsider praised the Retina Display again, as well as TouchID and Apple Pay support within apps. “While some critics have scoffed at iPad mini 3 for offering nothing more than greater capacity options, Touch ID and a gold color option, it’s also important for users to recognize that additional storage and Touch ID can’t be purchased later at any price,” we said. “At the same time, if those features appeal to you, you should also at least consider iPad Air 2, which sweetens the pot in a number of areas alongside its larger display.”

The fourth iPad Mini, the last one introduced to date, made its debut at Apple’s “Hey, Siri” event on September 9, 2015, and arrived on the market the same day. A rumor in May 2016 had Apple phasing out the category altogether, as iPhones got larger and cannibalized iPad Mini sales.

Level 2 Cache: 1 MB on-processor Video Out: HDMI, VGA (via Lightning adaptors), AirPlay Audio Out: stereo 16 bit mini The cellular-capable models weighed 0.69 lbs.

Introduced in October 2012, the iPad mini struck a balance in size between the iPad (4th Generation), which was announced at the same time, and the iPod Touch (5th Generation), announced a month earlier. Driving a 1024×768 display (the same resolution as the non-retina iPad 2), maintaining 10 hours of battery life, and meeting a lower price point meant making sacrifices, however; the iPad mini was powered by an A5 chip, rather than the faster A6 found in the recently announced iPhone 5 or the A6X found in the iPad (4th Generation), and had half the RAM of either.

In other respects, however, the iPad mini matched up well with the iPad (4th Generation): it included the new lighting connector, the same front- and rear-facing cameras, support for dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi, and the same broad variety of LTE bands for the cellular models.

iPad (4th Generation) was available in two color combinations, matching those of the iPhone 5: white/silver and black/slate. It was available in three price tiers, based on storage capacity: In October 2014, they received a second price cut to $249 ($379 with LTE), with the introduction of the iPad mini 3.

The 16 GB models were quietly discontinued in June 2015, making the iPad mini the longest-sold iPad to date.
