This version of the Pencil has an easy-to-lose cap covering a Lightning port for charging it (which requires an adapter, or awkwardly plugging into into the bottom of your iPad). The downside is that breaking the front glass is a more expensive repair–that’s why the school-friendly base model iPad doesn’t include this feature. The Air also includes True Tone and wide color, which makes the display look more vibrant by adapting to the lighting conditions around you. You’ll get the future-proof WiFi 6, which is just starting to hit the market, and a USB-C port that gives you more charging flexibility and lets you plug in hard drives, SSDs, SD cards, cameras, and monitors with an inexpensive USB-C hub instead of the pricey Lightning to Camera adapter required on older models.
For those who haven’t used iPad in a while, the latest iPadOS actually supports plugging in an external drive and browsing the files on it without any extra software, and that’s a lot easier to do on the Air. Unlike the iPhone, both sizes of the Pro come with a 120Hz display (refresh rate automatically switches from 24, 60, and 120 Hz based on the content you are viewing), which Apple calls ProMotion.
Speaking of the 12.9″, my one complaint with the Air and the 11″ Pro is that they don’t make very good use of the much larger screen space for the keyboard. In conclusion, for most people this iPad Air offers everything you need in a future-proof package and great price point.

It’s almost unspoken wisdom at this point that you should think twice about buying some costly Apple products in the late summer months, as the company usually announces new stuff during its annual September event. This model has a 10.9-inch display, and like the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro, it charges via USB-C and supports the latest Apple Pencil.
Uniquely, it sports a Touch ID sensor within the power button along its side that can unlock the tablet with your fingerprint. Comparatively, the newer model has some features up on the XM3, including support for two simultaneous Bluetooth connections and a sensor that can automatically play or pause your content when you put them on or take them off. But if all that you want is comfort, excellent sound, and a world-hushing noise cancellation effect, these are still worth getting for a deal. I can’t personally vouch for these, but they seem great for the cost, with Anker claiming up to 40 hours of playback per charge in noise cancellation mode, as well as support for two Bluetooth devices simultaneously.

Starting with the obvious negative, Apple has increased the price of the iPad Air over the last generation by around AED 500. But the extra spec you’re getting here, as well as the improved design, make that an understandable move from the company, and it feels justified.
With the new design, Apple has reduced the size of the bezels which makes the Air’s screen larger and without increasing the footprint of the device.
This means that you’ll also be able to use the latest generation Apple Pencil which sticks magnetically on the iPad and charges wirelessly. Apple was already trouncing the competition with processor technology and it’s not like you ever felt that the iPad was slow in day-to-day usage. On the multimedia side, you get four speakers that offer high-quality audio when you’re watching videos or films, and the rear camera has been upgraded to a 12MP shooter.
The home button has been dropped in favor of an all-screen design to make it more in line with Apple’s Pro products. There are still thick bezels around the outside of the display, as there are on the iPad Pro, but overall it feels like a big step up compared to the design of last year’s Air. We found this to work well throughout our testing time – our thumb fell naturally on this spot, so little effort was required to reach the button. On the right-hand edge of the tablet are volume up and down buttons, and there’s a magnetic connector below these to which you attach the Apple Pencil stylus for charging.
The iPad Air 4 features support for new accessories, including the second-gen Apple Pencil, which is another significant upgrade. We found the Smart Keyboard to be great for word processing, while the Apple Pencil is useful if you want to sketch on your tablet, take notes, or just sign documents in your own handwriting.
If you’ve yet to use a 90Hz or 120Hz display you won’t miss it here, but it would have been nice to see Apple include it on the iPad Air to make this tablet feel even more premium than it already does. We found the A14 Bionic chip to work phenomenally well, with the iPad Air (2020) opening apps in record times and easily handling multitasking and other complex tasks. The company argues that you use its cloud based storage system to store large amounts of photos, video and other files, but if you expect that you’ll be downloading a lot of apps we’d encourage you to go for the larger option if you don’t want to quickly fill your tablet up. On the rear of the iPad Air 4 is a 12MP shooter with an f/1.8 aperture which serves as your primary camera, and which also comes in useful when you’re using features such as augmented reality.
With many of us making much greater use of video-calling apps in 2020, it would have been a nice touch for Apple to improve the selfie camera here, but it’s the same sensor the company has used in the past. All major apps are optimized for the tablet’s display, with just a few options, such as Instagram, not working as well as you’d expect.
If you’ve got an iPhone then you’ll find it easy enough to get your head around iPadOS, but there may be a slight learning curve if you’re coming from an Android tablet. A single charge was good for around nine hours of using standard apps, web browsing and video playback, all over Wi-Fi, and if you’re only using your tablet lightly we’d expect it to last even longer.
According to Apple, the tablet is designed to last for 10 hours of searching the web or video playback over Wi-Fi, and we’d say that’s a fair estimate based on our experience. This isn’t the best battery life we’ve ever seen on a tablet, but it’s still very good, and most users should be perfectly happy.
