There are, however, some keyboard features that aren’t so obvious – like how to enter the degree symbol. I recently realized that I had no idea how to access the greyed-out (or light grey) numbers and symbols on the keyboard, so I looked into it.
This a pretty cool feature if you find yourself needing to type just a little something, like a text, and you only have one hand available.
You can select text – once you have your cursor positioned, keep your finger pressed on the iPad until handles appear. If you need a character with an accent – such as when you are typing a word from another language – press and hold on the letter to bring up more options.

One of the disadvantages of smaller iPads’ software keyboard is the lack of a numbers row. The 13-inch iPad displays a full keyboard with a numbers row and separate Caps Lock and Tab keys.
It’s a minor inconvenience, but if you do a lot of number entry on your iPad, then it becomes a major usability problem.

How to Use the iPad’s Nifty Flick Keyboard Feature
The QuickType keyboard on the iPad has been updated in iOS 11 to introduce a super handy new Flick feature designed to let you enter numbers and symbols without the shift key. When you upgrade to iOS 11 and take a look at the keyboard on the iPad, you’ll notice that all of the keys now display letters and number/symbols.
Typing symbols and numbers this way is simple, intuitive, and a lot faster than taking the time to use the shift key.
