iPad Pro 2022 rumored release date, price, specs, design and more
Currently, the iPad Pro 2022 has been tipped for a fall release, according to reliable tipster and Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman. The Logitech Crayon product page recently added support for two iPad Pro models that have yet to be announced.
In an amusing pre-release twist, some Optus customers in Australia were able to order the iPad Pro 2022 before it’s even been confirmed to exist.
The most recent rumor suggests that the chassis of the new iPad Pro 2022 will remain largely similar to its predecessor barring a change from a three-pin Smart Connector to a four-pin one that could be found on the top and on the bottom side edges.
The second design tweak we’ve heard talk of, via Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, is a glass back for the possible introduction of wireless charging. As well as extra screen space, this model could come with more storage and RAM capacity by default, allowing for enhanced overall performance too. This will hopefully allow more buyers to enjoy the deeper blacks and higher brightness that independently lit pixels provide. However, Kuo has backed off that claim as of late, and now display analyst Ross Young says an 11-inch iPad Pro with mini-LED is unlikely.
To be perfectly honest, the iPad Pro is already an excellent product and we’re hard pushed to name any serious weaknesses that need urgent improvement. To be clear, the 2021 iPad Pro has perfectly respectable battery life, but it’s noticeable that the 12.9-inch model “only” managed ten hours and 48 minutes in our web browsing test, while the 11-inch version achieved 13:42. If that’s a sign that the mini-LED screen is more power hungry than the IPS panel and both are indeed adopting the former this time around, then hopefully there will be larger cells to compensate. Okay, this is getting into seriously unlikely territory at this point, but the iPad Pro is at its best when accompanied by two first-party accessories: the Apple Pencil for doodling and the Smart Keyboard to make it into a surrogate laptop.

It succeeded the 4th generation iPad Air and is available in five colors: Space Gray, Starlight, Pink, Purple, and Blue. The chip has an 8-core CPU, an 8-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine which can process more than 11 trillion operations per second. The display is laminated and has an anti-reflective coating, as well as wide color, True Tone and 500 nits of brightness. It has Touch ID integrated into the Sleep/Wake button on the top right edge of the device, and stereo speakers with dual-channel sound in landscape mode. While you might be excited by the idea of the prospect of an update to the popular iPad Air 5, there’s some bad news: you’ll likely be waiting a while. We’ll update this section as soon as we hear any concrete news, but based on the above, we wouldn’t expect that for a while yet. and bar any currency exchange rate fluctuations, it’s unlikely that the iPad Air will change in price. For now, we’ve come up with a wishlist of upgrades that we’d like to see on the next-gen tablet, ranging from the highly likely to the outlandish.
There hasn’t been a single Apple product that has had the same chipset for more than one generation – though admittedly, rumours suggest that could change with the iPhone 14. One of the biggest complaints about the current iPad Air, especially at a starting price of £569/$599, is the 64GB of storage. While 64GB of storage was fine a few years ago, the size of apps steadily increases as they get more advanced – and let’s be honest, our photo libraries are fast filling up with photos and videos with a strong reluctance to delete anything. Sure, cloud storage is a good backup, but nothing beats having a copy saved locally to your device.
but the single rear-facing 12Mp camera setup of the iPad Air is getting a little long in the tooth. Rather than upping the megapixel count on the main sensor, we’d love a second camera on the iPad Air – possibly the ultra-wide, matching the standard iPhone 13 – to help capture those impromptu moments when you are using the tablet.

Two years ago, the iPad Air wowed us, and the 2022 model repeats the feat: it’s an impressively versatile and capable tablet. The powerful new M1 chip is welcome, and the extra punch will be appreciated by digital artists and gamers especially, even if it doesn’t offer a clear everyday benefit in the way improved battery life would. The 2022 Air arrives at the same price point as its predecessor but ups the power, adds 5G and brings an all-new front camera for better video calling. The angular, industrial design from the iPhone 12 and iPad Pro lineup returns, allowing the Apple Pencil 2 to clip to the top of the tablet and be instantly accessible for sketching or note-taking; it also charges when docked.
It’s annoying that the magnet isn’t a little more powerful, as while it’ll hold the Pencil firmly when you’re carrying the iPad Air around, it’s possible to knock it off when sliding the tablet into a bag or putting it down on a car seat. The new iPad Air is beautifully made and lightweight, with the 10.9-inch screen the ideal size for viewing your apps, emails and movies on the go. We did encounter one issue: the Touch ID sensor is still housed in the long, thin power button at the top of the tablet – and, as on the previous model, it rattles slightly under the finger, which really diminishes the premium feel. iPadOS is a great operating system for a tablet, with loads of easy-to-use apps, and a slick user interface that allows you to jump between high-power tasks.
Pair it with the Magic Keyboard (as long as you’ve got another $299 / £299 / AU$499 going spare) and the Apple Pencil, and the iPad Air can be a digital sketchbook, high-end gaming device, highly portable laptop and entertainment center all in one. We’ve tried to write this review on the iPad itself, and for the most part it’s been possible, and at times really helpful when we needed a small, lightweight laptop that we could just pull out while waiting for a train and type a few words.
However, the keyboard and trackpad feel a little cramped, and even though the Safari and Chrome browsers can offer a true desktop experience, it’s still nowhere near as expansive as on a full laptop. And while iPadOS is good, it’s still not primed for productivity – and 64GB as a base storage level simply isn’t enough when apps these days are regularly coming in at over 1GB.
For a lot of the things listed above – digital sketching, gaming, movie watching and so on – the iPad Pro 11 is superior, and not too dissimilar in cost now that it’s been out for a year. A dedicated laptop is still better for working on the go, and if you just want iPadOS and the great range of apps, then the base model iPad is perfect already.
True, if you place it in the weighty Magic Keyboard, which is the accessory that we recommend you buy (assuming you can afford it), the weight goes up to over 1kg – but that’s still less than many laptops, and with as much power under the hood, so it’s a worthy trade-off.
On our main review device it moved slightly under the finger when pressed, which instantly diminished the ‘premium feel’ – although a second Air we tested didn’t display the issue to the same extent. As we mentioned in our two-minute review, we weren’t hugely impressed when viewing 4K HDR movie content on Apple’s own TV app. The display is nicely anti-reflective, to the point that during our testing we never found that we couldn’t see what was on the screen because of a backlight – that’s often an underrated feature in a tablet, especially one that’s docked on a keyboard and needs to be viewed at a specific angle. You’ll be able to manage 64GB if you’re careful about what you download, but if Apple had launched the iPad Air with the base model coming in at 128GB we’d be far more inclined to recommend it here. We pushed things a little bit, speedily manipulating 3D objects in the popular app Procreate, and again the Air 2022 was appreciably smoother and faster. One other key spec: 5G is now onboard, meaning that if you go for the pricier iPad Air model you can get the blazing-fast data speeds on the go, coverage and provider permitting. The range of things it can do, from a double-tap to switch between eraser and pen, all the way up to a dazzling array of pressure sensitivity levels in high-end photo-editing apps, shows how versatile the Pencil is. We found ourselves enjoying digital sketching, image manipulation and note-taking with the stylus – but Apple’s notion that you can scribble anything more than brief notes, instead of using the keyboard, is nonsensical. The slippery nature of the glass means handwriting never feels or looks good, and only with incredible concentration could we get decent results, and forgo the much more handy keyboard.
No matter what we wanted to do on the new iPad Air, we didn’t find it a chore; our finger swipes were registered smoothly (although in some games we struggled to activate the gesture control to jump between apps as the action got in the way), and the animations were fluid. We’d recommend that those coming from older iPads, and are tempted to just copy over their normal homepage setup to the new device, start afresh.
If you’re someone who’s wedded to Pages, Safari and all the other apps Apple offers (for free, we might add, which is quite a big advantage) then you won’t notice as much of an issue, but stray too far from that ecosystem and you might get a little frustrated – or at least find yourself yearning for the more expansive user interface of a dedicated laptop.
The iPad Pro range comes with two cameras and a Lidar sensor, meaning you can be more forensic with your close-up photos, as well as truly scan a room to create a 3D render. The front-facing camera has been improved though, with a 12MP ultra-wide sensor allowing Apple to add in Center Stage, the feature that keeps you in the middle of the frame when you’re on a FaceTime call. It means you’re never looking directly at the speaker – would it be so hard to add another sensor into the long side of the tablet, so that it would become a great video conferencing tool when placed on a desk in landscape orientation, whether propped on a stand or used with the Magic Keyboard.
It’s a brilliant sketch pad, movie screen, internet browser and gaming machine, as well as functioning – to an extent –as a laptop replacement. You’re a digital artist on a (slight) budget The raw power of the M1 chip is very much on display here, and if you like manipulating 3D objects or working with multi-layer images, you’re onto a winner here… you can save money over the iPad Pro, and still use the apps you love with ease.
Apple iPad Air (2022) review: A new standard for tablets
The new iPad Air outshines its predecessor thanks to its powerful M1 chip, 12MP front camera with Center Stage and 5G connectivity. I thought its predecessor, the iPad Air 4 (2020), was one of the finest tablets on the market, but this new 2022 model is a step above.
But the upgraded M1 chip powering this fifth iteration of the iPad Air marks a notable step forward.
The iPad Air 5 (2022) releases in the United States on March 18 with a starting price of $599 for the 64GB configuration with Wi-Fi (opens in new tab), and it comes in your choice of 5 colors: Blue, Pink, Purple, Starlight and Space Gray.
There’s no price bump this year from Apple, as the new iPad Air costs the same as the 2020 model when it launched. Our unit also came with a number of accessories, including the Magic Keyboard ($299) and Apple Pencil 2 ($129), which are sold separately.
I loved the iPad Air 4’s design so I’m glad Apple didn’t change it for the latest model. I could complain about the lack of a headphone jack, but since most devices are ditching the port in favor of wireless solutions, it’s not a big deal.
One thing that’s worth noting is some users are complaining about iPad Air 5 build quality. We were impressed with the old model’s display since it delivered sharp picture quality on a relatively small screen.
Considering these factors, I was very interested to see how the current iPad Air’s display compared to the older model. Colors pop on the new iPad Air’s screen and visual details are easy to discern.
YouTube, Twitch and programs on streaming services like Netflix all look great on the relatively small iPad Air screen. Games like Genshin Impact run smoothly on the iPad Air thanks to the powerful M1 chip. I opened up 15 different tabs in Google Chrome and ran HBO Max to see if I could make the iPad Air 5 flinch.

The iPad Air 4 was a performant little machine, but its successor takes things to the next level in this category. The iPad Air 5 may be a small tablet but it delivers sound that’s big enough to fill a medium-sized room.
Though the sound quality lacks bass and is somewhat thin, it was easy to hear every explosion, scream and roar in Godzilla vs Kong. The camera’s smooth panning makes it feel like there’s a tiny director inside your tablet, and it’s a neat feature to finally have on the iPad Air.
During my personal testing, it took about 5 hours to drain the iPad Air’s battery to 50 percent from a full charge.
I watched a number of YouTube videos, surfed the web while having multiple open tabs and played some Genshin Impact. Aside from playing video games (something I don’t do on mobile devices outside of tests), this closely resembles how I use a tablet during a normal day. On the Tom’s Guide Battery Test, which involves surfing the web over Wi-Fi at 150 nits of screen brightness, the new iPad Air lasted 10 hours and 9 minutes.
The Apple Pencil 2 and Magic Keyboard are great optional accessories for the iPad Air that help you get more out of the device. As for the keyboard, it has plenty of space to let you type comfortably, while the trackpad feels responsive and easy to use. The Magic Keyboard is a must-have attachment if you want to use the iPad Air as a mini laptop, but the $349 will make you wince. The $129 Apple Pencil should have been included with the iPad Air in the same way the S-Pen comes with the Galaxy Tab S8 lineup.
However, the new iPad Air does still support Touch ID via the fingerprint reader built into the power button. The new iPad Air 2022 is ideal for consuming and creating content, and its $599 starting price is within reach for many people. The 11-inch Pro is basically the same size and close to the same price as the new Air, so while the cost of trading up is reasonable it’s also not much of an upgrade. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 is another great alternative if you’re not keen on purchasing an Apple product, though it’s not as powerful as the iPad Air.

Speculation about the development, operating system, and release of the original iPad began in 2002 prior to its introduction on January 20, 2010. The iPhone’s iOS operating system (OS) was initially used for the iPad but in September 2019, its OS was switched to a fork of iOS called iPadOS that has better support for the device’s hardware and its user interface is customized for the tablets’ larger screens. Since the arrival of the 10.2-inch iPad format, Apple has consistently upgraded the processor each year, so it would be a surprise if this didn’t happen with the 10th-gen model.
