A12Z vs. A14: Which Apple Chip is Better?

In March 2020, Apple introduced a new iPad Pro model with the A12Z Bionic processor. In multi-core, the additional two cores of the A12Z allow it to edge ahead of the A14 by about 15 percent, despite it being an older chip. With double the number of GPU cores, it is unsurprising that the ‌iPad Pro‌ with the A12Z surpasses the ‌iPhone‌ 12 and ‌iPhone‌ 12 Pro with the A14 by about 20 percent. To some extent, the surprising performance of the ‌iPad Air‌ may be put down to better thermals and fewer limitations on power consumption, though it seems unlikely that the large disparity could be caused by this alone. It is also important to bear in mind the iterative improvements that have occurred over the previous two chip generations and the advantages of the five-nanometer fabrication process.

For intense computational operations and multi-core tasks, the A12Z is the better chip, even though it is older and slower. With a large display on a “pro” device, users are more likely to expect to be able to perform complex multitasking, making use of the ‌iPad Pro‌’s eight cores.

For graphics-based tasks, due to the seemingly anomalous performance of the ‌iPad Air‌, the case is less clear.

For context: In my country, IPads and electronics in general are very expansive and not worth it for the price, so I’m going to buy one from Australia and a relative is going to bring it to me by the end of october.

2021 iPad Pro review: More of the same—but way, way faster thanks to M1

We wouldn’t be surprised if the M1 Mac mini eked out a victory in more sustained uses though, like encoding large video files. All told, the Pro is a massive performance win—which seems a bit crazy, frankly, given that the previous-year model we’re comparing it to was already crushing the competition.

The 14.5 variant of iOS has additional, iPad-specific features, like support for the Apple Pencil, more robust multitasking, and so on. iPadOS is an excellent mobile operating system, though feature creep has made it a little less accessible than it once was.

Apple has spent the past couple of years gradually introducing more features to bring iPads closer to parity with laptops as productivity devices. But we’ve also noted that a few little things can get in the way of making the iPad viable as a full laptop replacement for some people. The software represents a fresh start for computer operating systems compared to legacy-laden desktop OSes like Windows and macOS, and it’s loaded with cool voice control, handwriting recognition, and multitasking features that can make it feel downright futuristic. That shortcoming is primarily because most of the really powerful creative applications—from Adobe Premiere to Autodesk Maya to Unity to Apple’s own Final Cut or Xcode—don’t have robust iPad versions.

But to the platform’s credit, a few really powerful iPad apps, like Adobe Photoshop or Affinity Designer, are becoming increasingly available. As we alluded to earlier in the review, the new iPad Pro is like a sequel to a blockbuster movie: it recycles the basic formula and story beats but adds an interesting new character or two and amps up the “Wow!” The software is topnotch, the tablet-friendly app support leaves Android tablets in the dust, and the performance has no peer. On that point, I don’t think this new iPad Pro is worth a new purchase if you already have the 2018 or 2020 version, because those were already the fastest tablets on the market right up until this revision’s release.

If you’re a content creator or even just an avid consumer of HDR movies on your tablet, the upgrade could well be worth it.
