It’s faster than its predecessor, it’s easy to use and it features an upgraded selfie camera that makes video calling smoother than ever before. The new iPad can be used with the Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard (sold separately) for those times when you need a more laptop-style experience, and it comes running iPadOS 15, the latest version of Apple’s dedicated tablet OS, with its host of multitasking features, not to mention access to the thousands of apps and games found in the App Store.
In a nod to the unprecedented times we’ve all recently experienced, and the attendant Zoom boom, the front-facing selfie camera has been boosted to 12MP. The new iPad has the same 10-hour battery life as its predecessor, and there’s a 20W fast charger in the box, which when used with the bundled USB-C-to-Lightning cable ensures it’s quick to juice up the slate. As well as not offering Face ID, it lacks the recalibrating speakers found on Apple’s other tablets, while those looking for a laptop-style experience that includes the trackpad and clickable keys of the Apple Magic Keyboard will have to look to the more expensive iPad Air, as the iPad 10.2 (2021) only works with first-generation accessories. It measures 25.06 x 17.41 x 0.75cm, and has the same 10.2-inch screen as last year’s model, with the thicker top and bottom bezel; the former houses the 12MP front-facing camera, while the latter features the home button with built-in Touch ID sensor.
While the design looks slightly dated compared to the rest of the iPad lineup, it still feels like a sturdy bit of kit, which considering the price point is no mean feat. Weighing in at 187g, the Wi-Fi-only model is 3g lighter than last year’s iPad 10.2, while the Wi-Fi + LTE version 3g heavier than its predecessor at 498g.
It comes in just two colors: silver and gray – so if you’re after the gold hue that was an option for the iPad 10.2 (2020) you’re out of luck, and for a bolder look you’ll need to look to the iPad mini (2021), which offers pink and purple tones, alongside grey and gold colorways. The tablet is compatible with the Apple Pencil (1st generation), and we found that note-taking and sketching on the slate was a breeze.
To charge the Pencil you need to either plug it into the tablet’s Lightning port or use the bundled adapter with a Lightning cable, whereas the Apple Pencil (2nd generation) offers fuss-free magnetic charging from the tablet. While there’s no sign here of Apple’s Liquid Retina display tech, which offers brighter colors and an anti-reflective coating, the iPad 10.2 (2021) does come with the company’s True Tone feature – it’s the first time Apple has included this on its cheapest tablet.
However, if you’re after an affordable iPad, or you don’t spend hours scrolling through social media feeds, it’s not a feature you’re likely to miss. That said, during testing apps were quick to load, we were able to multi-task easily, and we didn’t experience any lag. Although, as with all iPads, there’s no support for a micro SD card, so you can’t expand the storage space at a later date. If you want even more storage space you’ll need to look to the iPad Pro range, which comes in 512GB, 1TB and 2TB variants.
The pandemic has led to a surge in the numbers of people using video calls, and Apple has acknowledged this by upgrading the front-facing selfie camera for the first time in several years. It’s similar to a feature found on the Amazon Echo Show 10, and we were impressed at how well it works and the smoothness of the camera movements. During our time with the tablet, we found the pictures we snapped were sharp and clear, with strong colors. We weren’t blown away by the quality, and images certainly aren’t a match for those taken on any recent iPhone; but if you need a camera to hand for productivity applications or other instances where image quality isn’t absolutely crucial, the iPad 10.2’s will more than suffice.
As well as offering many of the features found in iOS 15, it’s designed to make the most of the tablet’s form factor, and as such, it brings refinements to multitasking. We found that iPadOS 15 offers a slick experience on the new iPad 10.2 – this is Apple’s best yet, and it outshines Android tablet software.
During testing, we found this to be the case, with the slate good for around 10 hours of video playback before it needed recharging. If you’re on a budget, or you’re looking to replace an older iPad that doesn’t support iPadOS 15, and don’t need Apple’s top tablet features, this is the one to get.
With an improved front-facing camera and the handy Center Stage feature that ensures you’re always in the frame, the new iPad makes video calling an enjoyable experience. This is the first time the entry-level iPad has come with True Tone technology, which automatically adjusts the display based on the ambient lighting for the best viewing experience. The improved selfie camera and True Tone display aren’t reason enough to upgrade if you already own last year’s model – you’ll be able to get iPadOS 15 on your current tablet, and other than the additional storage, there’s not much else that’s new here. If you just want a tablet for streaming movies, TV or games, then you don’t need an iPad – Amazon’s Fire HD 10 is basically the same size and costs a lot less.

Er is dus alle reden om aan te nemen dat de iPad (2021) weer een succes wordt, ook al is hij opnieuw maar een ietsiepietsie beter dan het model van vorig jaar. De oude mini stamt alweer uit 2019, dus dat was hard nodig.
Waar kleine Android-tablets vooral ultrabudgetexemplaren zijn, heeft Apples minitablet high-end specificaties. Het design gaat terug tot de allereerste iPad Air uit 2013 en de significantste vernieuwing sinds die tijd is een wat groter scherm, dat er ook al sinds modeljaar 2019 inzit.
Dat is nog zo’n ouderwetse, fysieke knop die je echt kunt indrukken, zoals in de iPhone 5S tot en met 6S. Hij is voorzien van Apples eerstegeneratie-Touch ID-sensor, die minder snel en betrouwbaar werkt dan Touch ID-sensoren in nieuwere apparaten.
De iPad mini (2021) heeft zoals gezegd wel een vernieuwd ontwerp, hoewel je eigenlijk precies weet hoe het ding eruitziet als je ooit een iPad Air hebt gezien. Dat was op zijn beurt ook een mash-up van ideeën die we al eerder zagen bij de iPad Pro-reeks.
Lightning maakt plaats voor USB-C, waarmee je zonder adapter kunt verbinden met bijvoorbeeld een kaartlezer of beeldscherm. Het is een verrassend leuke functie, die ook uitstekend werkt in de praktijk. Hieronder kun je een demonstratie zien op de iPad Pro (2021). Als je vaak aan videobellen doet, is de nieuwe camera dus een leuke toevoeging. Alleen Apples duurste en goedkoopste tablets hebben nog de klassieke 4:3-beeldverhouding. Het Liquid Retina-scherm, zoals Apple ips-lcd’s in zijn apparaten aanduidt, heeft een resolutie van 2266×1488 pixels.
Je moet hem er zoals bij alle iPads wel los bij kopen en met 130 euro is hij bepaald niet goedkoop, maar de tekenervaring van Apples pen is erg fijn. We misten eerder de 120Hz-refreshrate van de meeste courante smartphones en ook sommige tablets, die zeker op het wat grotere scherm van een tablet een vloeiendere beweging had kunnen opleveren. De beloofde helderheid van 500cd/m² wordt, zoals bij andere iPads, vrijwel exact gehaald. We hebben voor deze test beide tablets sRGB-afbeeldingen laten zien en de iPad mini (2021) blijkt uitstekend in staat het bredere kleurbereik van het scherm, 97,4 procent van DCI-P3 in onze meting, daarop af te stemmen.
Multicore wint Apples kleinste tablet het wel van de courante iPad Air. De iPad mini (2021) is kortom een zeer snelle tablet en tablets van de concurrentie die even klein zijn, hebben vaak een stokoude en erg trage processor.
Het basismodel begint nu bij 64GB en de startprijs van 389 euro is hetzelfde gebleven, dus dat is een goede deal.
Je zult bij het overschakelen tussen apps of webpagina’s vaker even moeten wachten totdat hij weer is ingeladen.
De iPad mini (2021) geeft je dezelfde keuze als voorgaande jaren: 64 of 256GB, beide gecombineerd met 4GB werkgeheugen. Door de A15-soc is er nu 5G-ondersteuning op het model waar een simkaartje in past.
Alle versies van de iPad mini zijn een stuk duurder geworden. In iPadOS 15 zit een aantal verbeteringen die ook in iOS 15 te voorschijn komen.
Ook zijn er dezelfde verbeteringen aan het notificatiesysteem, met gegroepeerde notificaties, het notificatieoverzicht en de Focusmodus met filters voor notificaties die je ver kunt customizen.
IPadOS 15 bevat ook vernieuwingen die de iPhone met iOS 14 vorig jaar al kreeg. Op je homescreen kun je nu widgets tussen iconen plaatsen, waarbij er voor de iPad extra grote versies beschikbaar zijn die de ruimte beter opvullen. Net als in iOS 14 is er nu ook een Appbibliotheek op het meest rechtse scherm, zodat je niet altijd alle app-iconen in beeld hoeft te houden.
Tot slot biedt iPadOS 15 je de mogelijkheid om makkelijker notities te maken. Het scherm van de nieuwe iPad mini heeft wel een vrij smalle beeldverhouding, waardoor je in landschapsmodus minder verticale ruimte hebt dan op iedere andere iPad.
In directe vergelijking met de iPad (2021) ziet het er wat krapjes uit. Dat is best goed als je naar de rest van Apples aanbod kijkt.
Dat verklaart waarom de nieuwe apparaten het in deze test vrij goed doen. Datzelfde geldt, ondanks het volledig nieuwe design, ook voor de iPad mini (2021), die er precies hetzelfde uitziet als de iPad Air van vorig jaar, maar dan kleiner. Toch zijn beide apparaten aanraders in hun respectieve categorieën, wat ook te maken heeft met het gebrek aan concurrentie.

The latest iPad – now in its ninth generation – is now the only model in Apple’s line-up to retain the style of the company’s original tablets, courtesy of its aluminium frame, physical Home button and sturdy, thick bezels. So although it has the exact dimensions, 10.2-inch retina display, 8MP rear camera, 3GB RAM and 10-hour battery life of its predecessor, the new iPad still feels like remarkably good value. Upgrades for this model include an ultra-wide-angle 12MP front-facing camera, a beefier A13 Bionic chip processing and, in recognition of our ever-swelling digital libraries, the storage options have doubled in size, up from 32GB and 128GB to 64GB and 256GB – without a bump up in price. In truth, the upgrade isn’t hugely noticeable for most general use, but we find that videos and apps launch slightly quicker and, when streaming, the image processing is marginally improved, with less tearing.
Playing the Willow Springs race in Ford vs Ferrari on Apple TV, the iPad 9 (2021) displays an authentic colour palette with a detailed and smooth picture as the cars zip across the screen. From the gaudy fluorescence of Atlantis to the dark, shadowy recesses of the Russian submarine, the colours are punchy while remaining naturalistic, and there’s plenty of sharp detail and refined textures to enjoy.
Hit play on The Chain by Fleetwood Mac, and the airy expletive softly muttered by Lindsey Buckingham amongst the studio hiss is even more audible thanks to a nicely insightful treble. Once the acoustic guitar starts, it’s altogether rounder and sweeter in tone than when listening on the iPad 8th Generation, which sounds a bit flat in comparison.
There’s also plenty of detail in the subsequent crescendo, from the texture of the vibrating springs of the snare to the final electric guitar solo, which sparkles without any harshness. Similarly, when paired with the Cambridge Melomania 1 wireless earbuds, the typical hallmarks of Apple’s neutrally precise sound are present but delivered with more spirited dynamic expression. The added presence from the iPad 9’s audio processing means that, even on the in-built speakers, in busy films the dialogue tends to cut through with more clarity, and listening to Self Esteem’s intricately textured I Do This All The Time, we find ourselves notching down the volume slightly to maintain consistency with the boxier-sounding older model. With a camera set-up better suited for our increasingly online lives, as well as sound quality that maximises Apple’s own much-improved music streaming service, the iPad 9th Generation is still the best tablet in its field.
If your current device has seen better days, or you’re looking for an entry-level model for video calls that can also hold plenty of content to keep family members occupied, then this is an excellent option.
The iPad Is the Best Tablet
All iPads share an unbeatable selection of apps, stellar hardware quality, long battery life, and unrivaled customer support. In the latest Air, you get the iPad Pro’s fast M1 chip and updated design, which we’ve found makes the tablet more appealing and comfortable to use. Luckily you can still use Apple’s best accessories, like the second-generation Pencil and the Smart Keyboard Folio, with the Air, and that makes it a great tablet for someone who is willing to spend some more cash for a better experience but might gawk at the price tag of an iPad Pro.
iPad 2021 review: onze ervaringen met de negende generatie iPad
In 2017 startte Apple de traditie voor het jaarlijks uitbrengen van een nieuwe standaard iPad. Wat tegelijkertijd een traditie is, is dat de updates van deze iPad ieder jaar klein zijn. In deze review van de iPad 2021 delen we onze ervaring met dit nieuwe model dat vooral gebruikers zal aanspreken die nog met een wat ouder model op schoot zitten.
Qua design is dit model daarom ook precies wat deze gebruikers verwachten.
Het ontwerp is na al die jaren ongewijzigd gebleven, maar dat is niet erg. We kennen geen ander huidig Apple-apparaat dat er al zo lang nagenoeg hetzelfde uit ziet, op de Apple TV na.
Anno 2021 ziet de iPad er nog steeds prima uit, al vinden we toch dat het model wat ontwerp betreft wel toe is aan een update. Je kunt dus wel stellen dat we met een ‘vertrouwd design’ te maken hebben. Wat daarbij ook opvalt is dat Apple beide kleuren een zwart frontje gegeven heeft. Apple gebruikt voor deze standaard iPad vooral onderdelen die wat ouder zijn en (waarschijnlijk) nog wel ergens op voorraad liggen. Het display heeft dezelfde afmeting van 10,2-inch, wat nog altijd een prima formaat is voor doorsnee iPad-gebruik. De kwaliteit van het scherm zelf kan dan ook op een hoge beoordeling rekenen.
Anderzijds vragen wij ons af waarom Apple er True Tone in gestopt heeft, terwijl de antireflectiecoating nog steeds ontbreekt. Of dat nou met je vinger of met de Apple Pencil of een andere schrijfpen is: het voelt alsof er heel veel lucht zit tussen de glasplaat en het onderliggende display. Je merkt duidelijk dat Apple op dit vlak wat tijd aan het rekken is: hoe lang kunnen ze het nog volhouden om dit toch ietwat achterhaalde scherm te blijven gebruiken, zonder dat iPad-bezitters beginnen te klagen? We hadden dan ook liever gezien dat Apple het scherm van de iPad Air 2019 zou hergebruiken: een 10,5-inch scherm (dus ook ietsjes groter), met antireflectiecoating, betere kleuren én gelamineerd. Het is te hopen dat Apple volgend jaar alsnog de stap maakt naar een beter display. Je kan met de iPad 2021 dan ook moeiteloos meerdere apps tegelijk gebruiken.
De chip heeft in ieder geval geen moeite met geavanceerde apps zoals foto- en videobewerking, al kunnen sommige taken in die apps wat langer duren dan in bijvoorbeeld de iPad Air 2020. Apple komt regelmatig met updates waar een bepaalde chip minimaal voor nodig is.
Wat ook een prettige bijkomstigheid is, is dat je daardoor nóg langer van de iPad kan genieten. Eerder in deze iPad 2021 review noemden we al de broodnodige vernieuwing die Apple dit jaar doorgevoerd heeft. Het is bovendien een ultragroothoekcamera, waarmee je veel meer op beeld kan vastleggen. Apple gebruikt hiervoor een combinatie van software en hardware, want het is alleen mogelijk dankzij de ultragroothoeklens.

De camera zorgt voor automatisch inzoomen en een uitsnede waarin jij centraal staat,. Dit is ideaal voor FaceTime en werkt ook als je met meerdere mensen in beeld bent. Bij het kijken van een filmpje pakken we eerder onze AirPods erbij. Anderzijds denken we dat Apple op den duur ook voor dit model toch de overstap moet maken naar usb-c, ook omdat veel meer mainstream apparaten voor deze aansluiting kiezen. De kans dat je er ergens nog eentje hebt liggen, is daardoor elk jaar wat groter. Als alternatief zou je ook nog de goedkopere Logitech Crayon kunnen kiezen. Gebruik je de Apple Pencil ook om je iPad te bedienen (bijvoorbeeld met een spelletje), dan kan het getik door het niet gelamineerde display wel storend zijn.

Kinderen kunnen hun lol op met deze iPad, want het aanbod van apps is enorm. Maar voor wie meer met de iPad wil doen, kan toch misschien beter naar een ander model kijken. Dankzij de verbeterde camera ziet videobellen er beter uit dan ooit, dus als je nog van plan bent om veel thuis te werken is deze iPad je ideale belmaatje.
Ultragroothoeklens in frontcamera maakt Center Stage mogelijk Nadelen – Nog steeds geen gelamineerd display Verder is de iPad 2021 precies wat je van een iPad verwacht: een razendsnelle tablet waarmee je alle kanten op kan. Ideaal voor kinderen voor spelletjes of filmpjes, maar ook voor ouders die films en series op vakantie willen kijken of op de bank het laatste nieuws willen lezen.
We vinden dat het nu toch hoog tijd wordt dat Apple het scherm lamineert en ook de antireflectiecoating toepast, zodat de iPad ook buitenshuis beter te gebruiken is. We kunnen ons ook niet zo goed voorstellen wat Apple volgend jaar nog meer zou moeten verbeteren, zonder het design helemaal om te gooien.

And while it may look the same as last year’s iPad, there are some major changes under the hood, including a more powerful processor, double the storage, and improved cameras. It’s just the right size and price for most people, earning our Editors’ Choice award and making it the tablet we recommend most out of Apple’s lineup.
It measures 9.8 by 6.8 by 0.3 inches (HWD), weighs 1.1 pounds, and frames its 10.2-inch screen with a visible bezel, big enough to include the Touch ID button that’s missing from the iPad Pro.
Gamers, creatives, and people who love having lots of apps and local media will want to shell out an extra $150 for the 256GB model.
You can skip it if you’re happy tethering to your phone’s data plan, or primarily use your tablet on your home Wi-Fi network. True Tone, a feature that adjusts brightness and color temperature, makes its debut on the entry-level iPad this year, which is also great for indoor use.
And while there are some inexpensive options with less pronounced bezels, Apple’s Touch ID sensor is pretty hard to beat. Granted, those aren’t the same super-fast 5G speeds you can get on the iPad Pro, but it’s more than enough power for working on the go or streaming Netflix.

Awkward cylindrical design aside, the original Pencil is a good stylus—though despite Apple’s claims, it feels nothing like writing on paper, with no drag whatsoever. In addition to its larger 10.9-inch display, it works with the more intuitive and less slippery second-gen Apple Pencil, and has a more powerful A14 processor.
In testing, it was powerful enough to chew through demanding games like Alto’s Odyssey and Genshin Impact with ease. We put the iPad through its paces for several days and didn’t experience a single stutter—an impressive feat for the price. In our battery drain test, which streams HD video over Wi-Fi at full brightness, the iPad lasted 5 hours and 18 minutes before shutting down.
That’s a little less than we’ve seen in past years, but with more conservative use (and a lower screen brightness level), we believe the battery will last close to Apple’s estimate. And even though rival Samsung’s upgrade policy has improved exponentially over the past few years, it’s not as consistent with delivering its Android tablet OS updates on time. It performs better than pricier Android competitors, has a nice display well-suited for work and play, and will receive OS updates for years to come. The 12MP front-facing camera and the addition of Center Stage are also welcome upgrades for people who are working (or just video chatting) from home. The Best iPad to Buy (and a Few to Avoid)
It has the same shape and size as its predecessors, so all current accessories will work, including the first-generation Apple Pencil and the Smart Keyboard. The A13 Bionic chip, which debuted on the iPhone 11, makes it one of the most powerful tablets for the price, and this generation brought other welcome improvements, like 64 gigabytes of storage instead of a paltry 32.
Best iPad for 2022
Apple’s sleek line of tablets are powerful, user-friendly and there’s a variety of different models out there so you can find one that suits your needs. That’s good news for anyone who wants to do more than stream videos and music, browse websites and play Apple Arcade games.
Apple The new ninth-gen entry level iPad gains a couple of useful extras over last year’s solid but unexciting model: more storage for $329 (64GB, rather than the ridiculously low 32GB of the last model), a faster A13 chip and better cameras (most importantly, a wider-angle higher-res front-facing Center Stage camera that tracks your face via digital pan and zoom). It can handle the latest iPadOS just fine and should perform all the standard iPad tasks for some years to come.
This smallest iPad has a Liquid Retina display with True Tone and wide color, and promises up to 10 hours of battery life. If you’re an intensive user of graphics apps like those in Adobe Creative Cloud, you’ll definitely appreciate the higher performance of the M1-driven Pro.
If you’re considering the 11-inch iPad Pro as a laptop replacement, we recommend you spring for the 12.9-inch version for the significant increase in workspace; if you’re a screen buff, you may also want it for the Liquid Retina XDR display. Along with the increased performance, these were the first iPads to offer support for wireless 5G connectivity, though now Apple has expanded the 5G option to other models in the line.
The current 11- and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models as well as the 2022 Air are powered by the company’s M1 processor, the chip found in its latest MacBooks as well as the new 24-inch iMac.

iPad 2021 review: nog steeds de tablet voor iedereen
Net als bij de vorige iPad-modellen valt er niets te klagen op het gebied van afwerking. Zeker op een instap-iPad zoals deze die toch vaak door het hele gezin gebruikt wordt. Vijf duimen zijn gemakkelijk toegevoegd voor het ontgrendelen, terwijl je met Face ID hooguit twee gezichten kunt opslaan. De kleuren zijn nog steeds gedetailleerd en levendig, niets om anno 2021 over te mopperen dus.
Persoonlijk storen we ons er niet enorm aan, de randen zijn bijvoorbeeld wel handig om de iPad vast te houden zonder per ongeluk het scherm aan te raken, maar het ziet er wel ouderwets uit. Maar Apple blijft hier net zo consequent als op veel andere gebieden van de tablet.
Foto’s en video’s zien er net scherp genoeg uit, maar bij weinig licht zijn ze erg ruisgevoelig. Hij had het wel moeilijk bij weinig licht, maar daar hebben alle iPad-frontcamera’s last van.
Loopt er bijvoorbeeld een tweede persoon in beeld, dan wordt het camerabeeld automatisch uitgebreid.
Het voelt als een soort automatische cameraman voor de frontcamera, en we willen deze functie niet meer missen tijdens videovergaderingen. Inmiddels geldt bij Apple’s mobiele processors: ook een paar jaar oud is nog steeds retesnel. Voor draadloze verbindingen beschikt de gewone iPad 10,2-inch naast WiFi 5 met 866 MB/s up- en download alleen nog over het iets oudere bluetooth 4.2.
Gebruik van een eSIM is ook mogelijk, maar ondersteuning voor 5G is er in beide gevallen niet. Er zijn twee luidsprekers aan de onderkant, die goed verstaanbaar klonken tijdens onze videovergaderingen. Apple claimt een batterijduur tot tien uur voor surfen via wifi of het afspelen van video.
