iPad Mini 4
It features most of the hardware similar to the iPad Air 2 including its laminated display and design. However, there was minimal focus directly on the new device, with only a brief mention at the end of the iPad Pro portion of the keynote. The device is compatible with iOS 9.1, which was released on October 21, 2015, which adds the News app for the UK and Australia as well as additional emoji and other bug fixes.
Apart from this, most of the features that were introduced in iPadOS will work with this iPad, including support for external USB drives (using the camera connection kits), the redesigned split screen and multitasking interface (with support for two apps to be open at once) and support for Haptic Touch (no haptic feedback will be felt as the iPad family don’t have Taptic Engines).
Unlike the iPad Air 2, there is no leather Smart Case made by Apple for the device. Along with the iPad Air 2, there are 2 GB of RAM, allowing the device to support the advanced multitasking features made available with the iOS 9 operating system.
Like the iPad Mini 3 that came before it, the iPad Mini 4 is capable of making mobile payments via Apple Pay in combination with the Touch ID sensor, although this can only be done in apps as the device lacks the NFC antenna required for payments at a merchant terminal. It has a slightly smaller battery compared to the previous generations though Apple claims the runtime to be the same 10 hours as its predecessor. Reviews have generally been positive, with The Verge giving the iPad Mini 4 a 9/10, praising the display, fast performance, great camera, and multitasking but disappointed with the speakers and chamfered edges.
CNET also praised the new “more vivid” display and the slimmer design as well as the new features in iOS 9 that the device can utilize. However, they also criticized it for being more expensive than other 8-inch tablets and the multitasking features not working as well on the smaller screen.
iPad Mini (1st generation)
It was announced on October 23, 2012, as the fourth major product in the iPad line and the first of the iPad Mini line, which features a reduced screen size of 7.9 inches (20 cm), in contrast to the standard 9.7 inches (25 cm). The first generation iPad Mini received positive reviews, with reviewers praising the device’s size, design, and availability of applications, while criticizing its use of a proprietary power connector, its lack of expandable storage, its under-powered Apple A5 chip with 512 MB RAM, and the lack of a Retina display. On the day of the event, Apple CEO Tim Cook introduced a new version of MacBook family and new generations of the MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, and the iMac before the iPad Mini and the higher end fourth-generation iPad. [11] As well as being discontinued from stores, the iPad mini no longer receives software updates and is not supported by Apple.
[12] It can act as a hotspot with some carriers, sharing its Internet connection over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB,[13] and also access the App Store, a digital application distribution platform for iOS that is developed and maintained by Apple. The service allows users to browse and download applications from the iTunes Store that were developed with Xcode and the iOS SDK and were published through Apple. The iPad Mini comes with several pre-installed applications, including Siri, Safari, Mail, Photos, Video, Music, iTunes, App Store, Maps, Notes, Calendar, Game Center, Photo Booth, and Contacts. The device has an optional iBooks application, which displays books and other ePub-format content downloaded from the iBookstore.
[22] However, some newer features of the software are not supported due to relatively aged hardware that was shared on the iPad 2. While Apple stopping the latest iOS updates for the iPad Mini was expected by many in the industry, it has however led to some criticism, as the device was on sale until June 2015 and by June 2016, no further versions of the operating system beyond iOS 9 were to be made available to the tablet. The iPad Mini is available with 16, 32, 64 GB of internal flash memory, with no expansion option. Apple sells a “camera connection kit” with an SD card reader, but it can only be used to transfer photos and videos.
Apple offers other accessories, including a Bluetooth keyboard, several types of earbuds or headphones and many adapters for the Lightning connector. Reviews of the first generation iPad Mini have been positive,[34][35][36][37][38][39] with reviewers praising the device’s size, design, and availability of applications, while criticizing its use of a proprietary power connector and its lack of expandable storage and Retina display. [40][43] Joshua Topolsky of The Verge praised the industrial design of the iPad Mini, however panned its lack of Retina display and price.
