The 7 Best Gaming Headsets – Black Friday 2021 Reviews

These over-ear headphones have a great build quality and a very comfortable fit, with spacious ear cups and soft padding.

The Best Headphones for 2021

Earbuds do not seal off the ear canal and typically offer the worst audio performance of the bunch. Earphones seal off the ear canal and therefore offer better bass response, a more accurate stereo mix, and a more secure fit. And the latest cable-free trends, true wireless headphones, don’t even have a wire connecting the two earpieces. The sonic advantage of wired headphones is still quite significant, even if Bluetooth audio has improved dramatically in recent years.

No matter how much better Bluetooth has gotten, it is still based on a lossy codec stream, making it inherently inferior to a wired audio connection. If sonics are important to you and you want to go wireless, pay attention to what Bluetooth codecs the headphones support.

This is important mainly because not all headphones support both, and if you buy a pair that doesn’t support the codec your device is using, the headphones will still stream audio, but they will default to the SBC codec that all Bluetooth devices use, and SBC is a lower-quality stream than what AAC and AptX deliver. Many manufacturers, especially those in the business of making custom-molded in-ear monitors for musicians and engineers, turn to balanced armature drivers instead.

Or, in the case of the aforementioned custom in-ear monitors, the earpieces can be quite large—freeing up room internally for several balanced armatures per ear, with each driver handling a specific frequency range and tuned accordingly. Generally speaking, it’s possible to get excellent audio—or poor audio—from both dynamic and balanced armature drivers, although the two styles have certainly attracted their own fan bases.

Simply put, the best of the ANC realm is quite effective, with Bose leading the category, but plenty of other manufacturers from Apple to Sony offering top-notch options. Two, the ANC circuitry creates a faint hiss—not necessarily unpleasant, but certainly audible (similar to white noise or tape hiss).

This is often to mask the fact that the ANC circuitry can’t effectively tamp down some higher-frequency sounds, so the attempt is made to cover it with a hiss. So, when we’re describing good ANC, it’s more or less the opposite—low frequencies are effectively squashed, surrounding chatter and typical environmental noises are tamped down reasonably, and high-frequency hiss is just barely audible.

If you’ve had trouble getting in-ears to stay in place in the past, consider a pair that comes with multiple eartips, and earfins that sit against the ear to help add stability. Most wireless headphones now include a button that will summon your phone’s built-in voice assistant.

We’ve only tested a few thus far that can summon a voice assistant with a wake word or phrase (like “Hey Siri” or “Alexa”), but it seems the trend is likely to gain steam.

The Best Headphones

These headphones also have a lightweight design that is comfortable to wear for hours, and they feature an easy-to-use combination of touch controls and physical buttons that you can access without looking.

Although they might look different, the top-performing headphones in this list all have some key things in common: comfortable designs, class-leading audio performance, and a range of fantastic extra features, such as built-in voice assistants and wireless connectivity. So whether you’re looking for audiophile sound quality or budget-friendly earbuds that can handle a sweaty workout session, we’ve got you covered.

The Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones deliver excellent noise-cancellation and sound quality in a design that we found both comfortable and lightweight when we tested them. They don’t look different from their predecessors, the Sony WH-1000XM3 , but new features, including multipoint pairing, DSEE Extreme upscaling, conversational awareness and auto-play/pause using a built-in sensor, mean they’re a significant upgrade. SoundMAGIC E11BT The best earbuds on a budget Specifications Acoustic design: Closed Weight: 24.7g Frequency response: 20 – 20,000Hz Drivers: 10mm dynamic neodymium Battery life: 20 hours TODAY’S BEST DEALS Prime View at Amazon 375 Amazon customer reviews ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ Reasons to buy + Fantastic price + Elegant design + Comfortable with ergonomic tips Reasons to avoid – Treble tones can sound harsh

The SoundMagic E11BTs are an extremely capable pair of wireless in-ear earphones, and given their low price, it really is difficult to fault them.

They’re comfortable to wear thanks to ergonomically designed eartips and they’re attached to a flat neckband that won’t irritate you while running or working out. thanks to an IPX4 rating, they should withstand sweaty sessions, too, making them a solid option for an spare pair of workout buds.

With sophisticated noise cancellation, much-improved sound quality, and a honed aesthetic, we found the PX7 a delight to test and think they could give any of the headphones on this list a run for their money. For years, the Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2 were among our favorite wireless headphones because of their excellent sound, build quality and features. Sony WF-1000XM4 Wireless Earbuds The best true wireless earbuds Specifications Acoustic design: Closed Weight: 7.3g Frequency response: 20-40,000Hz Drivers: 6mm Battery life : 8 hours (earbuds) 16 hours (charging case) TODAY’S BEST DEALS View at Crutchfield Prime View at Amazon View at Walmart Reasons to buy + Rapid, full-bodied and eloquent sound + Truly useful features + Impressive call quality Reasons to avoid – Unremarkable battery life – No aptX support

During our testing, we found that compared to their predecessors, the Sony WF-1000XM3, the newer wireless earbuds offer enough quality-of-life features to make them worth upgrading to, even if they are more expensive. While other true wireless earbuds surpass the Sony WF-1000XM4 in particular areas – in terms of noise cancellation, for example – no other model comes close to offering such excellent quality across the board. This gets you everything we loved about the original PurePlay Z3, including detailed balanced sound, a whopping 80 hours total battery life from its petite USB-C charging case, and a comfortably fitting bud with physical buttons.

Our own issue is that app connectivity is patchy at best, and the ambient hear through mode is pretty much useless in comparison to the competition from the likes of Sony’s noise cancelling WF-1000XM4 . NuraLoop headphones The best Bluetooth earbuds Specifications Acoustic design: Closed Weight: 25g Frequency response: 20Hz – 20 kHz Drivers: 8.6mm dynamic Battery life: 16 hours TODAY’S BEST DEALS Prime View at Amazon View at Musician’s Friend Reasons to buy + Rich, adaptive audio + ANC and social mode + Rugged, sweatproof desig Reasons to avoid – Stiff neckband can get in the way When we reviewed these headphones, we found the star of the show to be the adaptive audio technology, which automatically determines a customized listening profile and feeds you well-balanced, lush sound tailored to you as a result.

By applying noise cancellation to phone calls as well as music, Bose has made great strides in the field of noise-cancelling headphones .

If you just want full noise cancellation, you’re good for a whopping 30 hours of peace and relative quiet before you need to find a charger. Bose QuietComfort Earbuds The best noise-cancelling earbuds: Specifications Acoustic Design: Closed Weight: 8.5g Frequency Response: N/A Drivers: N/A Battery on-board: 6 hours (earbuds) 12 hours (charging case) TODAY’S BEST DEALS Prime View at Amazon View at Crutchfield View at Walmart Reasons to buy + Best-in-class ANC + Rich, clear sound Reasons to avoid – Lack on-board volume control – Bulky charging case

We also enjoyed the high sound quality – albeit a touch less bassy as compared to Sony – with superb clarity. Faux leather and memory foam, combined with winningly un-creaky plastic, make for a fit we found extremely comfortable (even if the earpads themselves absorb ear-heat quite quickly and then give it straight back).

Jabra’s Sound+ control app even walks you through a brief hearing test to establish exactly how the EQs should be set to best suit your ears. Sony WH-CH510 The best budget on-ear headphones Specifications Acoustic design: Closed Weight: 132g Frequency response: 20Hz-20,000Hz Drivers: 30mm dynamic Battery life: 35 hours TODAY’S BEST DEALS Prime View at Amazon View at Crutchfield View at Walmart 1 Amazon customer review ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ Reasons to buy + Incredibly affordable + Solid audio and battery life + Lightweight and compact Reasons to avoid – No 3.5mm jack or USB audio Looking at the Sony WH-CH510, it’s mind-blowing that wireless on-ear headphones could cost this little, not to mention a pair that has decent sound, a USB-C port, and 35 hours of battery life. Thankfully, most of the compromises Sony has made with the WH-CH510 haven’t been too crucial – the lack of analog input mirrors the loss of the 3.5mm port on most modern smartphones while the lightweight, plastic construction improves their portability and comfort.

While they won’t have the superb clarity, balance, and sense of space that their WH-1000XM4 siblings boast, the sound these on-ear headphones produce definitely belies their size and price. You’ll find most genres perform well here, although tracks that already have low mids and bumped treble might get uncomfortably exaggerated. Reliable and easy to use, you might miss waterproofing and a few minor features – but at this price, it feels foolish to complain too readily. If you listen to songs you think you know inside out, the Stellias’ precise separation of the frequencies means that you will probably hear details you’ve never noticed before.

But if luxury is your thing, the full-grain leather cups, woven cables, brushed copper accents, and matching carrying case are likely to appeal. That luxury feel is translated right down to the presentation of the user manuals in a neat little leather-style wallet – and you may well expect to find this level of detail in exchange for parting with $3,000 / £2,799 (about AU$4,200).

The latter, at least, has changed now – thanks to advances in Bluetooth technology like aptX HD, the best true wireless earbuds have never sounded better. They’re fantastic all-rounders, offering a long battery life, noise cancellation, and excellent audio quality for the price.

The best headphones in 2021

Black Friday deals are coming soon, and if previous years are a guide then you can expect big discounts on all types of headphones. The Apple AirPods Max come in third – they’re pricey, but stellar sound quality and features mean they’re worth the investment, especially if you’re an iPhone user. The Jabra Elite 75t Active currently stand as our favorite wireless earbuds, thanks to their durable aesthetic, long battery life and energetic sound.

Sony WH-1000XM4 The best headphones overall Size and weight: 10 x 3.03 x 7.27 inches, 9 ounces | Battery life (rated): 30 hours (ANC on), 38 hours (ANC off) | Bluetooth range: 40 feet (12 meters) | Special features: Active noise cancellation, customizable EQ, multipoint technology Low Stock $248 View at Amazon $248 View at Crutchfield $248 View at Walmart Excellent sound and noise cancellation Plenty of features via Sony Connect Headphones app Stellar touch controls Multiple ways to connect the headphones Call quality could be improved

Not only are Sony’s flagship headphones the top noise-cancelling model at the moment, but they outperform every competitor in numerous categories, including sound and special features. Listeners can also play around with the Sony Headphones Connect app to personalize audio by selecting from several well-engineered presets or by manually adjusting the EQ to their liking.

Bose even made improvements to sound quality, as the 700s produce clean, balanced audio for crisp highs and solid bass; lows are felt more when at max ANC level. Smart assistant integration, touch controls, and improved multipoint technology also make these some of the most intuitive noise-cancellers for commuters and music lovers alike. The active noise cancelling works brilliantly, general sound quality is crisp and impactful, and the 3D Spatial Audio feature is a game-changer if you’ve never used it. This uses head-tracking tech to create a surround sound effect, which can give movie playback a definite edge compared to other headphones. Jabra Elite Active 75t The best wireless earbuds Size and weight: 0.8 x 0.7 x 0.6 inches, 0.2 ounces (per bud) | Battery life (rated): 7.5 hours; 28 hours (with charging case) | Bluetooth range: 30 feet (10 meters) | Special features: Active and passive noise cancellation, customizable EQ, fully waterproof $99.99 View at Amazon $99.99 View at Best Buy $140.90 View at Walmart Loud, full sound Sleek, waterproof design Active and passive noise cancellation Strong battery life with fast charging Can get extremely loud at max volume Jabra found a way to improve our favorite wireless earbuds, packing a hell of a lot of performance into a tinier waterproof design.

The Elite Active 75t boasts better battery life and sound than the AirPods Pro, plus its charging case holds more portable power and feels sturdier. The buds produce consistently clean detail and warm, lively instrumentals and vocals that can also be tweaked through special features (e.g. built-in EQ, music presets) in the companion app for personalized sound. Best of all, the new over-the-air ANC update brings active noise cancellation to the earbuds and does a surprisingly good job of blocking out ambient sound. If you wanted grander noise-cancelling results, we do recommend the all-new Elite 85t, which boasts its own ANC chip and delivers great noise neutralization and sound.

Underneath the smaller, redesigned casing are six sensors, a powerful three-mic array, and Apple’s renowned H1 chip that boosts performance on all fronts. Audio is significantly improved from the AirPods 2, with the buds producing clean, balanced sound to enjoy music, podcasts, and movies peacefully. Adding to its sonic capabilities are new features like spatial audio that were introduced with iOS 14 and create a theater-like soundscape that makes watching movies even more immersive. ANC is also surprisingly effective, as the outward- and inward-facing mics manage to neutralize a large amount of ambient sound; low-humming noises and neighborly chatter will go completely silent. Hands-free Siri just keeps getting better and better, while cool features like Announce Messages, Audio Sharing, and auto switching showcase the AirPods Pro’s multifunctional talents.

The new $179 AirPods 3 also gets some of these features, including spatial audio, Announce Messages and Adaptive EQ, plus MagSafe charging, a water- and sweat-resistant design and 6-hour battery life. The MW08 is more expensive than Apple’s pair of buds, which is saying something, but you won’t be worrying about the price too much when you’re enjoying deep, impactful sound with adjustable active noise cancellation. The D-shaped outer panels look great, all polished ceramic and precisely machined stainless steel, while IPX5 water resistance keeps rain and sweat at bay.

Proprietary TriPort acoustic architecture and a volume-optimized Active EQ gives these cans solid audio performance with well-rounded frequency range for a nice mix of lows, mids, and highs. Cambridge Audio Melomania 1 Plus The best headphones for hi-fi audio in an earbud form factor Size and weight: 1.1 x 0.6 x 0.6 inches, 0.2 ounces (per bud) | Battery life (rated): 7 hours (High Performance Mode), 9 hours (Low Power Mode), 45 hours (with charging case) | Bluetooth range: 30 feet (9 meters) | Special features: High Performance mode, EQ customization, IPX5 water resistance, voice assistant support $99.95 View at Amazon $99.95 View at Amazon $138.93 View at Walmart Excellent sound Long battery life Elegant, splash-proof design No ANC Mediocre voice call quality Take the unique High Performance mode, which activates the same hi-fi-grade amplification that Cambridge Audio uses in its CX range of stereo amplifiers. In addition to affordable noise cancellation, the Enduro ANC also offers a fully foldable design, Hi-Res Audio support when using the detachable 3.5mm cable and even NFC pairing. AirPods 3 The best standard AirPods overall Size and weight: 1.21 x 0.72 x 0.76 inches, 0.15 ounces (per bud) | Battery life (rated): 6 hours, 30 hours (with charging case) | Bluetooth range: 40 feet (12 meters) | Special features: Adaptive EQ, Spatial Audio, MagSafe Charging $169.99 View at Amazon $174.98 View at Walmart $175 View at BHPhoto Adaptive EQ with well-balanced sound Spatial audio support Improved ergonomics Longer battery life No ANC or Transparency mode Loose fit Proprietary technologies like Adaptive EQ to adjust frequencies in real-time for more detailed sound, and Spatial Audio for producing 3D-like effects, play pivotal roles.

Even new features that were introduced via iOS 15 update make their way onto this third-gen product, including Enhanced Find My, which tracks lost AirPods while they are within close distance of iDevices or a MacBook. Where the QC Earbuds are lacking is in both design (these are some bulky, heavy buds) and battery life; 6 hours with ANC on looks good on paper, but it’s really 30 to 45 minutes shorter than what the spec sheet reads.

Some models offer personalized sound via companion app, which allows the user to create their own profiles and tweak EQ levels to their hearing.

Any headphones that come with a carrying case, charging cable, user guide, and extra ear cups or tips are solid purchases.

We test sound by listening to predetermined sample tracks across different music genres, including hip-hop, rock, jazz, classical, and pop.

The best gaming headsets in 2021

It’s not often we see many open-back gaming headsets, with a microphone included, and that makes for a more open, wider sound without having to buy separate gear. Razer Blackshark V2 The best wired gaming headset Specifications Wireless: No Drivers: 50mm, Razer TriForce, Titanium Connectivity: 3.5mm, USB soundcard Frequency response: 12Hz – 28,000Hz Features: Detachable noise-cancelling mic, in-line cable controls Weight: 262g TODAY’S BEST DEALS View at Walmart View at Amazon View at Razer Reasons to buy + Restrained styling + Comfortable + Great audio + Only $100 Reasons to avoid – Cable hardwired into headset Razer’s Blackshark V2 gaming headset manages to do just that by offering killer audio quality, great price, and easy-to-use software.

Elsewhere it’s the usual impressive build quality, generous padding, clear mic, and high comfort levels over longer play sessions that the Cloud II design has always offered. Replacing the hilariously bulky Sennheiser GSP 300 series, the Epos H3 design shifts away NFL head coach headset into something a bit leaner and stylish.

In our review, we were blown away by the powerful bass that never spoils the mids and highs, which isn’t surprising with a frequency response of 10Hz – 30,000Hz, making it a killer headset for gaming and listening to music.

Steelseries Arctis 9X The best multi platform gaming headset Specifications Wireless: Yes Drivers: 40mm, Neodymium drivers Connectivity: Wireless USB dongle, 3.5mm wired, Bluetooth Frequency response: 20Hz – 22,000Hz Features: Retractable noise cancelling mic, DTS Headphone:X, 7.1 surround Battery life: 20 hours TODAY’S BEST DEALS View at GameStop View at Walmart View at Best Buy 11 Amazon customer reviews ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ Reasons to buy + Solid gaming sound + Comfortable ‘ski goggle’ headband + Great Mic + Bluetooth Reasons to avoid – Just under $200 is a lot – Weak Bass

The great battery life clocks in at over 20 hours out of the box; you can keep playing while you charge, too, simply by connecting the headset to your PC with a USB cable.

The distinctive ski goggle headband is really effective at keeping the weight of the headset away from your head, and even after playing for hours, we’ve never felt it digging in. There are niggles to dampen the party, of course (a non-detachable mic being chief among them), but you can’t complain when you’re getting excellent 7.1 sound for such a low cost. Creative SXFI Gamer Best headset with surround sound Specifications Wireless: No Drivers: 50 mm Neodymium magnet Connectivity: USB-C, 3.5 mm Stereo Input Frequency response: 20Hz – 20,000Hz Features: Positional Audio Weight: 336g TODAY’S BEST DEALS Prime View at Amazon View at Dell View at Walmart Reasons to buy + Great price + Pretty good virtual surround sound + Low-key and comfy design design Reasons to avoid – Cumbersome software – Lack of wireless support – That red microphone light

Best PC Gaming Headsets 2021: Wireless, Budget and More

But choosing the best gaming headset for your ears and head shape isn’t easy, due in part to the sheer amount of options that are available. With the ever-rising popularity of esports and the relative simplicity of combining off-the-shelf audio hardware with cushy earcups, a sprinkle of software wizardry and a mic, PC gamers are now offered more choices than ever. A quick search of popular online retailers yields hundreds of choices across dozens of companies, ranging from less than $10 (£8) to over $600 (£460).

Comfort is more subjective than measuring audio output and input, but generally speaking you should avoid plush gaming headsets with thick bulges, cheap foam and cloth covers. If you’ve heard Bluetooth audio in years past and hated it (it definitely was bad for a long time), give an aptX-enabled headset a listen. The HyperX Cloud Alpha is the best gaming headset for most players, offering nearly perfect sound quality and an awesome value, especially if you can find it for under $100. Noise reproduction with these cans sounds natural and the drivers avoid pesky flaws, like overly aggressive bass or highs. This isn’t a revolutionary headset, but it delivers the necessary sound quality and top-of-the-line comfort with the rare reasonable price tag.

In terms of long-term wearability, the headset earns its Cloud branding with a light, comfy fit built comprised of quality materials.

This includes thick memory foam padding on the headband and earcups and HyperX’s decision to opt for aluminum over plastic in some important areas.
