You’re effectively preaching the same “the human eye can’t see more than 24fps” rhetoric just like the peasants you mock. The sound will reach one ear slightly earlier than the other, and this will create the depth and direction we hear in our day-to-day lives.
Simulated surround increases the reverb of your sound, adding in delays in post in an attempt to recreate this effect. With physical surround, the effect of sound around you is created by using multiple speakers, simply because the drivers have to sit so far away from you. Statistically speaking, gaming headsets are not worth their sticker price, and your money’s better spent elsewhere. Whether or not this is something you’re after, it’s not worth the price of admission, and often-times is simply worse than a good pair of balanced stereo headphones.
“Dolby Digital 7.1”, as is the most common, is simply a simulation using the two (sometimes angled) drivers in each cup on your headphones. Below, I’ll list a few examples of configurations that come in at the same, or cheaper price points than their counterpart gaming headsets.

Looking for my first “high end” gaming headset. Need advice. : sennheiser
I’ve had a pair of Turtle Beach Recon 50x’s for years (free with the XB1 I bought) and they are “fine”.
[Hardware] The Best Headphones for gaming are not “gaming Headphones” : pcmasterrace
So I have noticed that a lot of people are asking if the new gaming headset their looking at buying is a good one and as an audio engineer i can’t recommend any of them. All they do is take a pair of average(at best) drivers(speakers) and slap some RGB LEDs a cheap mic a nice logo that might match your mobo or your keyboard and even buttons.
My Thoughts On The Sennheiser Game One : headphones
I just got this headset a few days ago, and I gotta say I’m very pleased with it, so I’m gonna give a review here. They also have an impeadance of 50 0hms, so most modern devices should be able to drive these just fine, but I’ve heard (no pun intended) that an AMP will make these sound even better. These aren’t very bass heavy, but that’s not a bad thing as this allows you to hear everything in a song, sound effect, etc. Look at the HyperX Cloud 2 for example, its provided USB sound card severely decreases the mic quality to cancel noise yet it still picks up things like a keyboard and mouse. Its nice to see Sennheiser taking their popular headphones and making them into gaming headsets.
