As some companies try to find clever ways to let you control your devices, such as swipes or gestures, there’s something to be said for physical buttons being easy, accessible, and fun. The Emberton’s design might not strike a chord with everyone: it’s a brick-shaped speaker made to look like a portable guitar amplifier with metal grilles covering the front and back. I’ve been using the Emberton nonstop since I got a review unit to test, and it easily hit the 20-hour lifespan claim when it was piping out music at medium volume. The Marshall Emberton is easy to recommend if you’re looking for a small Bluetooth speaker with powerful sound, long-lasting battery, and USB-C charging — the latter of which is currently a rarity in the market.
Marshall Stanmore II Review

Marshall heeft onlangs zijn lijn Bluetooth speakers bijgewerkt en voor 280 euro valt de Stanmore II Bluetooth in het midden van zijn drie nieuwe opties qua grootte, prijs en kracht. De Woburn II Bluetooth, die een extra woofer verpakt, is niet goedkoop, maar voldoet aan zijn prijs, terwijl de Stanmore II Bluetooth, ook niet goedkoop, een beetje te duur aanvoelt voor wat je krijgt. Het is een solide speaker, maar als je bereid bent wat geld te sparen en op te springen voor de Woburn II, zul je niet teleurgesteld zijn. Lees in de volgende alinea van deze Marshall Stanmore II review meer over het ontwerp. Maar met 350 x 185 x 195 mm (hbd) en 6 kilo, zorgt het voor een vrij omvangrijke luidspreker.
Het stelt je ook in staat om aangepaste EQ-presets te gebruiken of je eigen EQ-presets te maken, in combinatie met de bas- en treble-knoppen op het bedieningspaneel. Dit zou niet moeten gebeuren, punt, maar het gebeurt alleen bij waanzinnig hoge volumeniveaus, dus je zult dit probleem waarschijnlijk niet tegenkomen. Dit nummer vervormt niet op topvolumes, en op meer gematigde luisterniveaus hebben de drums een gezonde, robuuste aanwezigheid in de lage tonen – niet overdreven versterkt, maar zeker krachtig.
Op standaardniveaus zijn de bassen en hoge tonen echter mooi in balans.
De instrumenten in het lagere register hebben een rijke, volle aanwezigheid die niet overdreven wordt versterkt, terwijl de koperblazers, strijkers en zang in het hogere register helder zijn en ideaal in evenwicht lijken te zijn met de lage tonen, niet in concurrentie met hen. Dingen kunnen hier worden aangepast vanuit de vlakke responsmodus, maar het is een uitstekend startpunt en veel luisteraars zullen de dingen graag laten zoals ze zijn.

Helaas vervormen de drivers op sommige nummers met een serieuze sub-bas in de mix bij hoge volumes, hoewel dit geen probleem is, tenzij je graag luistert naar volumes die ernstig gevaarlijk zijn voor je gehoor.

Vanaf het moment dat de speaker via bluetooth gekoppeld is speelt deze ieder geluid van je smartphone af. Het retro design nodigt uit om er een platenspeler op aan te sluiten. Met de bass en treble knoppen pas je dit helemaal naar wens aan. Ook bij 70 % volume merk je geen vervorming en is het geluid hard genoeg.
Ook als we Avicii draaien merken we weer waar deze speaker toe in staat is. Helaas hadden we maar één Marshall multiroom speaker om te testen.
We hebben voor de ervaringen met een multiroom opstelling dus even moeten spieken bij Techradar. Hoewel ze er maar kort op ingaan spelen de speakers in een multiroom opstelling perfect synchroon volgens Techradar.
Ook het aanpassen van de hoge en lage tonen direct op de speaker is fijn om snel even alles naar wens in te stellen als je van plaat of cd wisselt. Dat je zowel via bluetooth, wifi, Aux-ingang en RCA-ingang muziek kan afspelen is een grote plus. Op een plank naast je platenspeler of in de kast, deze speaker staat overal goed.
Marshall Stanmore II Speaker review: Classic in form, versatile in function
The wooden box, textured vinyl covering, and manual control knobs reinforce that classic vibe, though of course these days the Stanmore II can be operated and adjusted through Bluetooth connectivity and voice commands via Google assistant. Stanmore II is the midrange offering in Marshall’s wireless speaker line, with a price tag of around 350 euros that puts it into DXOMARK’s Advanced category.
The brand says, “Stanmore II is the most versatile speaker in the Marshall line-up and is perfect for any room, big or small. Our engineers put the Marshall Stanmore II through our rigorous DXOMARK Wireless Speaker test suite.
With a global score of 144, the Marshall Stanmore II ranks high in our wireless home speaker database. The Marshall Stanmore II delivered decent to very good performances across all our use cases, making it a versatile choice.
Because it’s a forward-firing device, it is meant to be placed near a wall, which also neatly hides the purely functional back panel. The Stanmore II struggles some with localizability because the sonic image is a bit blurry, the wideness is narrow, and distance performance is affected by the lack of high-end extension and high mids.
The Marshall Stanmore II has a timbre score that places it among the top devices our engineers have tested thus far, and it performed well across the various use cases and with a variety of types of music and other content in this key attribute.
The device lacks high-end extension and some high midrange, however, which leads to somewhat dark representations of our test tracks.
The device struggles in noisy environments because of the lack of high-end extension and high mids, but effective low midrange keeps voices from getting completely lost. Our dynamics tests measure how well a device reproduces the energy level of a sound source, taking into account attack, bass precision, and punch.
Overall, the Marshall Stanmore II had a strong showing in this attribute, with punchy, snappy dynamics marked by good attack and bass precision, even though the device lacks some low-end extension. Here are a few sound pressure levels (SPL) we measured when playing our sample recordings of hip-hop and classical music at maximum volume: Peak clipping can happen at any volume setting when the music or other content has a heavy bass presence, such as loud kick hits; this may be attributable to an overshoot on compression or a physical issue with the speaker.
The Marshall Stanmore II is a good all-around performer, matching or surpassing the scores of much more expensive devices in our database rankings.
Marshall Stockwell Bluetooth Speaker Review
I have wanted to do this review for the Marshall Stockwell Bluetooth speaker for a while, and it seems, given the number of emails I received about it, most of you do too. A few years back, Marshall got dipped their toe into the consumer audio market, and since then, it seems they have gone ballistic with the number of speakers and headphones they have put out.
The Stockwell is Marshall’s mid-priced and mid-sized Bluetooth speaker designed to be used around the house, but it is still small enough to travel in a pinch. It has a claimed battery life of 25 hours, can be used to charge your phone on the go, and houses 2 2.5 inch drivers and hard controls for bass, midrange, and treble. I get that they are trying to keep everything in line with the Marshall design ethos, but there comes the point where style must take a back seat to functionality. Its retro design looks very cool and definitely in line with the compani’s amps, making them an icon in the music industry. For as good-looking as the speaker is at the front, it’s positively hideous from the back with all the quality control stickers going on, but thankfully you get a flip over a leather case that helps cover that up. As mentioned, you get the ability to control the volume and EQ settings directly from the device, but round the back, you will also find a USB 2.0 port which you can connect your phone to charge.
My only gripe with this is its placement should have been on one of the speaker’s sides, as having a cable sticking right out the back seems like an afterthought on such a sleek design. I would have expected a far deeper low end from such a design, but Marshall Stockwell fails to give a real sense of depth and really comes apart at high volume. At more moderate volume, the speaker sounded good with rock and pop genres with pleasant smooth mids. These Edifiers blew us away in our recent review with the fantastic audio fidelity and power displayed with a wide variety of music.
It easily beats out the Marshall for sound and builds quality, although, admittedly, it is nowhere near as good looking as the Stockwell.
