Google Cardboard was arguably one of the most significant factors in bringing awareness of virtual reality to consumers. The cool thing is that the tracking capabilities of the new Daydream-capable processors can also be helpful for Google Cardboard. Cardboard apps can be readily adapted to take advantage of the new capabilities, which makes headsets such as BoboVR Z4 more relevant now than ever. I received a review copy of the BoboVR Z4 from GearBest, an electronics store that began in Hong Kong but has now expanded to include distribution centers in the US, UK, Spain, Russia, and China, enabling them to deliver products much more quickly. The BoboVR Z4 includes the headset, and in some kits, a joystick controller that looks very similar to the nunchuck for the Nintendo Wii. Here is how it compares in size to a couple of generic Google Cardboard headsets:
The BoboVR Z4 has integrated headphones which can adjust forward or backward and has metal arms that can flex sideways. On the left side of the bottom of the headset, there is a volume rocker switch. The Z4’s button is on the bottom right side of the headset, conveniently placed for your thumbs. It does require more effort to press than I was expecting but it works, so long as the phone is fully inserted in the Z4. I tested it on the YouTube app for Cardboard with my iPhone 6 and with my Samsung S6 and it worked flawlessly. turning the wheel adjusts the IPD, moving the lenses closer or farther apart
Many headsets use foams or a set of suction cups to hold your phone in place. The Z4 instead uses a flexible metal bracket with only a thin foam strip to hold your phone in place (and avoid scratching it).
The Z4 has dozens of vents around the face mask area to allow air to flow through and reduce lens fogging.
It also just barely fit my S6 with the Otterbox Defender case (with the outer rubber cover removed).
Almost all Cardboard apps have a setting where you can specify your headset by scanning a QR code. and that information is used to warp the image precisely so that when you view, the distortion is canceled out by your headset’s lenses. As I mentioned, the headset can be adjusted in many ways to customize the fit to your head. But please understand that neither can hold a candle to the Samsung Gear VR’s tracking (due to asynchronous timewarp, low-latency display, and other technologies borrowed from Oculus Rift).
I haven’t tried it with a Google Daydream-ready phone yet, nor have I tried Cardboard apps updated for Daydream. I suspect the performance for those would be dramatically better and would be similar to those of the Gear VR, but I can’t confirm that until I actually try it.
The biggest ones for me are the large field of view and the good quality integrated headphones. If you’re looking for a headset for yourself, or to use to show your 360 photos and videos to your clients on a Cardboard-compatible app, the BoboVR Z4 would be a very good choice and an excellent value among Cardboard viewers.
They have very good prices for the items that they carry — generally lower than most other retailers. They’re based in Hong Kong but they have warehouses in the US, UK, Spain, Russia, and China, so they can send items faster to you.

BOBOVR Z5 review: affordable smartphone VR headset
In 2017, the first two versions of the BOBOVR Z5 released, do look similar to the popular Google Daydream View 2016, in terms of the grey fabric cover and design. The two versions of the 2017 BOBOVR Z5 also support different controllers and content platforms, which is important for users to take note of. We were excited to receive the BOBOVR Z5 and get immersed in Google Cardboard VR, as well as assessing the limitations and possibilities of affordable mobile virtual reality headsets. The marketing copy was all written in Chinese, which gave an early indication of the model and type of headset we had received (mainland 2017 version of the BOBOVR Z5). On removing the headset from the plastic covering, it was also accompanied by a basic cleaning cloth and foldable printed instructions (in Chinese). The ear-sized built-in speakers are also an obvious difference from the Google Daydream View headset. As we mentioned earlier, an easy tell-tale that our headset was not the newer 2018 model of the BOBOVR Z5 was the head support. The newest version has full plastic headband support and the speakers are designed slightly differently.
This means that the version we tested is more portable with flexible head straps but is also less rigid, which we assumed meant a less firm fit. Finally, the plastic, spring-mounted clip to hold the smartphone in place in front of the lenses is firm and easy to use.
Some users also praised the placement of the audio cable in the center, as opposed to being placed on one of the sides of the headset, where many products have it located. This makes it easier to mount the smartphone in the headset and to plug in the audio jack to the mobile device.
It is also possible to tether a second mobile device to the BOBOVR Z5 by using the instructions provided by Google, to act as a controller emulator. In addition to our product page, the manufacturer makes the technical specs for the BOBOVR Z5 available on their website here.
There is some confusion over the manufacturer’s claim that the VR smartphone headset offers 720° surround stereo.
This may be a marketing faux-pas, although the quality of sound from the built-in speakers is good considering this affordable mobile VR headset’s price. The manufacturer claims that the product is breathable and anti-allergy; we can confirm we had no issues with the device being unbreathable. In addition, the BOBOVR Z5 has a “Heat Dissipation Design”, meaning the VR smartphone headset is meant to cool your mobile phone while it is being used to reduce overheating.
Once the app or game is selected, connect the headphones and place the smartphone in the holder on the VR headset, and enjoy. Based on the information provided across different websites and on our own testing, this Google Cardboard VR headset is compatible with both iPhone and Android smartphones with display sizes between 4 and 6 inches.
As mentioned, the version of the Z5 we tested is the slightly older model and comes with an adjustable headband, which although was flexible, didn’t always provide a snug fit for the various sized heads and hairstyles (or lack thereof) in the Aniwaa office.
The nose gap and pressure on the nose support was not perfect for everyone who tried the headset at Aniwaa, but compared to many VR mobile devices, the comfort was very good and the straps very easy to adjust for varying “craniofacial” measurements. The IPD and screen distance are the main factors that alter how big or how close the virtual world is viewed through the lenses. Steve Noble, our Head of Content, glowing after some basic VR interaction with the BOBOVR Z5.
We found that the QR code for the BOBOVR Z5 worked well, in terms of it better calibrating the HMD for use with Google Cardboard. We tend to agree with the general user feedback being positive for this smartphone headset at its price point.

BoboVR Z4 Review (2021): The Best Affordable VR Headset?
This brand is made even better by the immersive sound and 3D vision functions that are integrated to give you a perfect computer reality experience. Another interesting feature about BoboVR Z4 virtual reality headset is that it is compatible with most of the smartphone models with Android and IOS systems.
For you to successfully create your thrilling computer reality, you should download the VR App to your smartphone, and this should allow you to utilize the wide field of view that the headset comes with. BoboVR Z4 virtual reality headset is pretty good in heat dispersion since the cushioning allows efficient air circulation.
BoboVR Z4 is Best Low-cost VR Headset
Things you should look for include a wide field of view, an easy drop-in mechanism for inserting the phone, adjustable lenses, and a control button. Some of the older headsets on the market had a very narrow field of view, cutting off your peripheral vision. If you have a low-resolution phone screen, when that image is stretched across your entire field of vision, you’re going to see the individual pixels.
As a result, users with older phones sometimes prefer a headset with a narrower field of view, especially if they mostly use them for watching movies.
Another issue that affects the virtual reality experience is whether you’re able to focus the lenses on the headset. I found the headset to be comfortable to wear, with adjustable straps and leather-like padding around the face area.
The front cover also has openings on the sides, so if you do want to use your own headphones, or plug your phone in to charge it, there’s plenty of room. In order to use this headset, you will need to install the Google Cardboard app, available for free for both Android and iOS. Fortunately, one of the companies that distributes a rebranded version of the same headset, the Virtoba X5, did make a QR Code, as did several Reddit users. That’s a good thing, because Google’s new Daydream platform came out last fall, and promised to offer better performance, better graphics, and a cool new motion controller.
