Wel jammer dat ze geen vervangbare accu hebben toegevoegd zoals de Steelseries Arctis Pro Wireless heeft, deze zal je aan het einde van de dag echt op het dock moeten zetten om hem op te laden. Maar goed, met ca 18 uur real-world accuduur kom je een heel eind denk ik. In eerste instantie lijkt er weinig veranderd aan het design ook, Astro’s unieke en opvallende designkeuzes zien we hier duidelijk terug. We zien iets verval richting het hoge, maar de ervaring met deze unit is echt uitstekend: goed, niets overdreven, geen vervorming. Alleen is het maximale volume niet extreem hoog terwijl de drivers dat ongetwijfeld wel aan kunnen. Vermoedelijk verstandig voor je gehoor, maar een paar dB extra hadden van mij wel gemogen.
De Dolby modus helpt ook zeker bij film content, een andere categorie waar deze unit wel in uitblinkt. Er zijn veel zeer goed klinkende headsets op de markt, maar deze houdt prima stand.
Eén feature die nog wat poetswerk kan gebruiken is de software, daar zien we nog wat ruwe kantjes.Hij is effectief, je kan equalizer profielen maken en drie verschillende opslaan, en wat extra’s zoals het kunnen aanpassen van de noise gate van de microfoon is fijn, maar de polish van moederbedrijf Logitech en hun G Hub zal voor minder techie gebruikers wel een fijne toevoeging zijn.
Ook de microfoon is keurig, althans voor een wireless mic is hij bovengemiddeld goed.
Maar met elke refresh kijken we ook naar de verbeteringen die er hadden kunnen zijn. Vooral het feit dat de accu er nog altijd vast in zit, in plaats van de dubbele accu die je in het basisstation oplaad a la Arctis Pro Wireless vind ik een gemiste kans.
Hoewel er dus verbeterpunten zijn en vooral de Arctis Pro Wireless dus een geduchte concurrent blijft voor PC gebruikers op zoek naar gemak blijft Astro een paar hele duidelijke voordelen houden welke je kunnen overtuigen.

This is a premium wireless gaming headset, with thick and comfortable velour earpads, a very adjustable design, solid battery life, and a slew of features.
The headphones attach to the band using metal bars, which are also use to adjust the headset’s height and rotate the ear cups. Materials like leatherette offer better isolation overall, but you need something a little softer and more flexible to establish a decent seal around a pair of glasses.
Having easily replaceable parts is a great idea, but here that interchangeability makes using the Astro Gaming A50 Wireless worse—it feels cheap, despite being $300. On the back of the right headphone, there’s the volume dial and power switch, as well as buttons for toggling the A50’s Dolby sound and EQ presets.
The included base station is what you use to connect the Astro Gaming A50 Wireless to your PC or console, and using is generally pretty simple—just plug the USB cord in, put the headset in the cradle, and it’s ready to go. On PC, I only ever had to unplug it for a second to fix it, but on PlayStation 4 I ran into issues much more frequently, and it wasn’t always just charging—sometimes the headset didn’t connect at all.
On top of the headset itself, you get the included wireless base station, micro USB cord for connecting it to your platform of choice, and an optical cable for playing on the PlayStation 4.
This standby feature means if you forget to shut off your headset and go to sleep, it won’t lose much charge when you next pick it up.
However, it also means if you’re prone to laying down as you play or watch movies or what have you, you might run into it going to sleep while you’re using it—as long as you move your head at least every few minutes it shouldn’t be an issue. The heavy metal soundtrack of Doom sounded great, but never overshadowed all the different snaps, pops, and booms that make the game’s combat such a satisfying audio experience.
This headset offers Dolby Audio surround sound for gaming on both the Playstation 4 and PC, and while it works well enough, the directional effect is definitely a little on the light side. However, considering this is more or less a homebound gaming headset: the likelihood that you’ll encounter frequent noises loud enough to distract you is pretty unlikely, but hey, I guess everyone’s neighbors are home these days, so all bets are off. Much like many products on the market, there’s a very significant de-emphasis in the bass range, which means people with deeper voices will come across pretty distorted.
The build quality is suspect, the microphone is quiet and distorts deeper voices, and the base station offers just as much annoyance as convenience.
It doesn’t always connect to the platform its plugged into, getting the headset to sit in the right position is finicky, and it needs to be reset seemingly at random. For less than half the price the SteelSeries Arctis 7 offers all the same features, with a durable and more comfortable build, as do the HyperX Cloud Flight S, Corsair Void RGB Elite Wireless. If you really want something uber premium, the HyperX Cloud Orbit S and the Audeze Mobius sound far better—they’re slightly more expensive, but might be worth it.

Astro Gaming A50 Wireless Headset + Base Station Review
It’s a solidly built pair of headphones with prominent pipe-shaped vertical aluminum supports that connect the large, rounded rectangular earcups to the headband. A micro USB port on the bottom of the right earcup lets you charge the headset through a wired connection if you don’t want to use the base station. Each earpad features a generous amount of memory foam covered with breathable fabric, matched by padding on the underside of the headband. For either console, plug the base station in with the micro USB cable to enable the microphone and power the headset, then connect the optical audio output of your console to the input on the station with the included optical audio cable to enable sound through the headphones. You can also adjust the microphone’s noise gate mode and sidetone level, though the customization options here aren’t anywhere close to the mic-tweaking you can do with the Logitech G Pro X or Sennheiser GSP 670. The noise gate presets seemed rather aggressive at first, but after some experimentation in Astro Command Center, I found that the default mic gain levels were simply a bit low. When the electric bass kicks in, it sounds punchy without overpowering the mix, letting even the delicate strumming in the left channel come through clearly. The Crystal Method’s “Born Too Slow” sounds powerful and energetic on the A50, giving plenty of response across the frequency spectrum.
The backbeat is punchy and packs weight, while the screeching vocals, guitar riffs, and snares get lots of high-mid response to drive the track. The Astro Command Center enables some useful tweaks to sound and microphone performance, which further improve the experience of using the headset. That said, it feels like a small step forward over the 2016 model, while several other gaming headsets have since established themselves as equally capable, and occasionally offering even better sound. On the more affordable end, the Turtle Beach Elite Atlas Aero and Razer Nari Essential sound excellent for less than half the price of the A50.
None of these headsets have convenient charging bases, but they all have their own appealing aspects, and are worth your consideration, showing how far this category has grown since the original A50 came out. Review: Astro A50 (Gen 4)
Dit versterkt en verbetert het geluid, wat voor een sensationele geluidservaring kan zorgen. In één oogopslag is te zien dat het een Astro headset betreft dankzij z’n unieke industriële look met tegelijkertijd enige elegantie. Astro staat bekend om de erg goede kwaliteit van het geluid en dat is nu niet anders. Ook bij films en muziek zul je een mooie beleving mogen verwachten van de A50 en voor iemand die al zijn media uit de PlayStation 4 haalt, is dit model een mooie allround headset die prima prestaties levert.
Dat gezegd hebbende, mensen die goed geluid willen hebben tegen een acceptabele prijs, kunnen prima bij Astro terecht. Het prijskaartje is zeker niet voor iedereen even aantrekkelijk, want ongeveer €300,- is hoe dan ook een forse investering.
Gelukkig krijg je hier wel een hoop voor terug, maar geen enkel product is perfect en zo ook de A50 niet. Alle audiokwaliteit is prima, maar spelers horen jou met een matige kwaliteit praten en dat steekt wat af tegen de rest van deze headset. Het punt is echter dat het opladen ongeveer drie tot vijf uur kan duren en daarvoor moet de headset of aan een snoer gehangen worden of in de docking station geplaatst worden. Als je dat aflegt tegen andere headsets in dezelfde prijsklasse, dan duurt het opladen net iets te lang én de batterijduur is bij gebruik ook korter. Verder kampt de headset regelmatig met audio drops omdat het een draadloos model betreft. Met name de side toning configuratie is een probleem dat al een tijd speelt en Astro heeft ons hier helaas geen oplossing in geboden, noch verzekerd dat die er komt.
We tasten dus volledig in het duister wat deze problemen betreft, maar we hopen dat dit snel aangepakt wordt.
De Astro A50-headset wil iedereen tevreden stemmen

Alweer drie jaar geleden werd Astro door Logitech overgenomen voor een slordige 85 miljoen dollar. De headset wordt voornamelijk geprezen vanwege zijn gebruiksgemak, comfort en uitstekende geluidskwaliteit. Deze kits bestaan uit opklikbare onderdelen die de headset voorzien van andere kleuren.
Er is uitgebreide software beschikbaar in de vorm van het Astro Command Center. Met deze mixer is het mogelijk om een volumebalans te maken tussen game-, chat-, microfoon en aux-geluid: ideaal voor livestreaming.
Astro heeft het voor elkaar gekregen de microfoon zelfs enigszins vol te laten klinken. Wel reageert hij ietwat onnatuurlijk op medeklinkers, wat af en toe zorgt voor onaangename artefacten. Dit maakt de microfoon prima voor multiplayergebruik en het minimaal becommentariëren van gameplaystreams. Zo kun je vooraf verschillende klankbalansen maken en deze vervolgens gebruiken tijdens het gamen op een console. Deze tikken zijn soms ook hoorbaar tijdens het wisselen tussen verschillende equalizer-presets. Middels deze insteek lijkt Astro een headset te willen leveren die voor iedere gebruiker kan voorzien hun wensen.
In-game is deze laagfocus een minder groot probleem en reageert de headset prettig op impactvolle momenten. Mits de juiste equalizer-instellingen zijn toegepast, luistert deze headset moeiteloos weg.
Deze headset wil heel graag de ultieme oplossing bieden voor zoveel mogelijk gamers. De draadloze verbinding is daarnaast van uitstekende kwaliteit en heeft een groot bereik.
