The built-in smarts are set up via the Google Home app, the cradle charger negates searching for a tiny charging port in semi-darkness – your speaker simply sits on its nest when it needs juice – while its connectivity brings a plethora of streaming options to the table, including hi-res support. The JBL Link Portable is roughly a centimetre shorter and squatter than the Ultimate Ears Boom 3, with a top plate like a rounded-off square rather than a strictly cylindrical design. Its closely-woven fabric jacket puts us in mind of an Ultimate Ears product, but there’s an altogether more retiring feel that should make it fade into your home decor. Where the Sonos One has to stay put in your lounge, the Link Portable feels perfectly comfortable indoors but is always ready for the next road trip. You can press this to stop audio, timers, alarms and responses, or hold it down for more than two seconds to activate or deactivate the Google Assistant. It is available in six colours, though our black model fits into any room of the home – its rounded edges blend in happily until we bark “Hey Google” at it.
The Link Portable’s mics, offset from the volume controls on the top plate of the speaker, never fail to pick up our voice, even during playback. It’s also an open-sounding mix, with plenty of room for the furiously fast-paced drums, bass, guitar and screamed vocals within Carne to be separate and distinguishable. The album continues to Serpe and we note that JBL has not highlighted the treble here, opting for an altogether more integrated, hi-fi sounding product.
Considering this speaker’s diminutive dimensions, it’s a brave move, but the Link Portable’s bass is more emphasised than much of the competition on the market and fits in line with what JBL calls its 360-degree Pro Sound.
On the issue of placement, we find that if we remove the JBL Link Portable from its charging cradle and place it upright on our coffee table or other surfaces more susceptible to resonance, the bass accuracy is affected – more so than many rivals. We place our Link Portable next to the slightly larger Ultimate Ears Boom 3 and find the volume equally as room-filling on our decibel meter.
All in all, the JBL Link Portable presents a detailed, musical, spacious and cohesive listen, with hands-free Google Assistant, at a highly competitive price.
Review: JBL Link Portable – prima speaker met slimme functies
Aan boord zit een accu van 4800 mAh, die maar liefst acht uur nodig heeft om leeg te raken. Natuurlijk is het al jaren mogelijk draadloos naar muziek te luisteren wanneer je gebruikmaakt van bluetooth. En anders kun je het heel snel regelen via Google Cast of Apple AirPlay 2. Dat kan handig zijn wanneer je al een andere slimme speaker met de Assistent aan boord hebt staan in dezelfde kamer, zoals hier het geval was. Dat gezegd hebbende is 149 euro ook niet ontzettend weinig geld voor een relatief goede bluetoothspeaker. In beide gevallen stelt de JBL Link Portable gelukkig niet teleur qua audiokwaliteit.
In dit geval betaal je ook iets extra voor de mogelijkheden via internet, maar dat is helemaal niet erg. Dat is jammer, maar naar verloop van tijd valt dit niet meer op. Alles in het midden klinkt gewoon prima, waardoor je kunt genieten van redelijk wat detail in de muziek.
Omdat je de JBL Portable met het internet kunt verbinden, waardoor de speaker een streepje voor heeft op bluetoothspeakers binnen hetzelfde prijssegment, kun je er een paar toffe dingen mee doen. Dat kun je allemaal gemakkelijk en snel regelen in de apps van beide slimme platformen. Dat je hem dan ook nog 8 uur lang onderweg kunt gebruiken is een kers op de volle slagroomtaart.
JBL Link Music smart speaker review: Pretty good things in a pretty small package
Jonathan Takiff / IDG The JBL Link Music (left) is about the same size as the recently discontinued Google Home (right), but it sounds significantly better. Step back a few feet from the Link and the sound field really opens to fill the room, with special zing and balance when cranked to a medium-loud level. The aural presentation is not as phat-sounding as a Sonos One or Bose Home Speaker 300, but at less than half the $200 price of those rivals, it comes close enough for pleasurable rock, folk, jazz, hip hop, and even hoity-toity classical music entertainment. There’s also enough bottom end extension (down to 60Hz) in a Link Music to make the room sway on an electro-dance pop thumper like Dua Lipa’s “Hallucinate,” found on a Spotify fresh hits list.
Now being regularly discounted to $79.95 (down from the original $119.95 MSRP), this mighty mite also ticks a bunch of the feature boxes you might be hoping for in a smart speaker. You can also ask the Google Assistant to serve up a recipe; answer a burning question; or command the lights, thermostats, window shades, and door locks in your smart home to do their thing. On the backside, a small panel holds Bluetooth connectivity and microphone on/off switches and the power line connector, the latter mounted about an inch up from the speaker’s bottom. You’ll also be asked kindly to murmur a few phrases into the speaker’s two top-mounted pinhole microphones, so the Link Music can thereafter understand and respond to you personally. Once done, it’s ripe and ready to handle a “wake up” or “I’m home” mission, with preset (or user customized) command strings that, say, light-up Philips Hue bulbs as well as turning on the radio news.
Jonathan Takiff / IDG The JBL Link Music delivered a pointed Citizen Cope missive with better clarity than the Sonos One it competes with. In my crowded home Wi-Fi environment, the JBL Link Music also suffered sometimes at start-up from a ghosts-in-the-machine sputtering noise that could last from a few seconds to even a full song.

Ook vindt u hier de Bluetooth-koppelingsknop, microfoon-mute-knop, aan / uit-knop en batterij-indicator. Je kunt op deze knop drukken om audio, timers, alarmen en reacties te dempen, of je kunt langer dan twee seconden ingedrukt houden om Google Assistent in of uit te schakelen.

Review: JBL Link Portable
It is docked on a charging plate, and can be moved out into the garden if you want relaxing music while reading a book or solving crossword puzzles. Ordinary smart speakers are not very portable, because when they are plugged out of the socket and into another place, they need time to connect to the network before they can be used again.
With Link Portable, you can control smart products with your voice, just like with Google Nest speakers.
There is no app for Link Portable, but open Google Home on your mobile and you can make sound setting there if you want.
On music, the bass register appears a bit messy, there is very limited dynamics and control here.
JBL Link Portable Review
At $179.95, the JBL Link Portable isn’t significantly more expensive than some of the company’s Bluetooth-only models of similar size, and offers Wi-Fi connectivity with Google Assistant compatibility, not to mention a waterproof build and solid bass depth. Available in black, blue, or gray, the 6.7-by-3.5-inch (HW), 1.6-pound Link Portable resembles a cylinder, but actually has four broadly rounded corners and thus panels that are almost flat.
The speaker itself has a wraparound cloth grille, and yet the Link Portable is waterproof—its IPX7 rating means it can be submerged up to a meter for 30 minutes, so it can certainly withstand splashes, rain, and even being rinsed off (though the same is likely not true for the charging dock).
Holding the central button down for two seconds summons Google Assistant, but this can also be done via voice, as there are microphones up top to pick up vocal commands.
A back panel houses buttons for power, Bluetooth pairing, and mic mute, as well as a USB-C port to charge the speaker directly. We also found the mics totally responsive to our requests—it was quick and easy to play music or get weather reports or in-progress game scores. On tracks with intense sub-bass content, like The Knife’s “Silent Shout,” it delivers palpable bass depth, though no one will be looking around the room for the hidden subwoofer. Bill Callahan’s “Drover,” a track with far less deep bass in the mix, gives us a better sense of the Link Portable’s general sound signature.
On Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild,” the kick drum loop receives an ideal amount of high-mid presence, allowing the attack to retain its punch, while the vinyl crackle and hiss gets boosted and pushed forward in the mix, so there’s plenty of sculpting in the higher frequencies. Orchestral tracks, like the opening scene from John Adams’ The Gospel According to the Other Mary, tend to sound a little boosted in the bass department, mainly because the primary low-end push for the Link Portable seems to happen in the lows and low-mids, and not as much in the sub-bass realm.
The Bottom Line The JBL Link Portable speaker offers Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity along with AirPlay 2, Chromecast, and hands-free Google Assistant support in a waterproof design with solid audio performance for its size.
JBL Link 20 review
JBL richt zich al enkele tijd op smart speakers met de speciale Link lijn. Met deze voice assistant kun je van dezelfde functionaliteiten genieten als bij de Google Home speakers. Sinds oktober 2018 is Google Assistant Nederlands ondersteund, waarmee je niet alleen Nederlandse spraakcommando’s kunt gebruiken, maar ook antwoord krijgt in eigen taal. De JBL Link 20 maakt het dankzij Google Assistant mogelijk om apparaten met spraak te bedienen.
Je kunt hiervoor gebruik maken van spraakcommando’s door te beginnen met het “Hé Google…”. Je kunt in de Google Home app ook apparaten groeperen en toewijzen aan specifieke ruimtes.
Het is wel belangrijk om te letten op de Google Assistant ondersteuning: dit kun je vaak herkennen aan het logo met “Talks with Google Assistant” op de verpakking. Om te kijken of er sprake is van een goede prijs/kwaliteitsverhouding, heb ik gekeken naar de adviesprijs. Daarbij is het ook goed om te kijken in hoeverre dit model nou beter is dan bijvoorbeeld de kleinere JBL Link 10. Op dit moment wordt de JBL Link 20 aangeboden voor een adviesprijs van € 132,99 (hij is op dit moment wél in de aanbieding: hier scoor je hem voor nog geen 120 euro). Dit is een stukje duurder dan de kleinere variant, hoewel je nauwelijks meer geniet van ‘onwijs’ verbeterde geluidskwaliteit. Wel is er sprake van twee keer zo lange accuduur (10 uur), wat interessant kan zijn voor degene die hem langer mee willen nemen.
Echter moet je goed nadenken over de afmeting en of dit echt het verschil maakt in jouw ogen om daar wat meer voor neer te leggen. We zijn zeer te spreken over geluidskwaliteit en de ondersteuning van Google Assistant.
