Game One Headset Review

Editor’s note: this Sennheiser Game One review was updated on March 23, 2021, to include a contents menu and address alternative headsets. Gamers who listen to lots of music will find a capable ally in the Sennheiser Game One. Thankfully, this headset isn’t clad in RGB lighting or extreme branding, but for Sennheiser the red accents are a little out of place.

The upside here is that this type of headphone design lends itself better to the reproduction of 3D space, and that can give you an edge in deathmatch, RPG, and FPS games.

If you want to use this for the Nintendo Switch or a PC with only a headphone/headset jack: you’re probably going to want to grab a TRRS adapter to combine the microphone and audio signals. If you’re used to HyperX or Razer headsets, you may feel like the Sennheiser Game One lacks bass, but that’s not really true.

This type of sound is really good for RPGs, first-person shooters, and any game where music plays a pivotal role. The problem is that it requires a fair bit of power—which isn’t really ideal when you consider that entry-level gaming headsets are meant for as little futzing as possible.

If you don’t know how to boost gain in software, or if you’re soft-spoken, you may find yourself yelling a lot at the computer with the Sennheiser Game One.

It’s not uncommon for microphones on gaming headsets to do this because it’s so very hard to get good mic quality from units so small. Not only is the Sennheiser Game One great with audio reproduction on a budget, but it’s comfortable over long sessions, easy to adjust volume on the fly, and can even be used for monitoring if you want.

EPOS | Sennheiser Game One review: “Excellent audio, but somewhat lacking in features”

An excellent soundscape and incredible listening experience work hard to make up for the lack of certain features many take for granted at this price point There are no strobe LEDs, particularly fancy cooling vents or heavy futuristic effects here, but a simple red chrome accent around an all-black plastic shell does the trick nicely. Audio quality is exceptionally well-balanced, offering up just as much detail in the whispers and footsteps of The Last of Us Part II as it does the pitchy screeches of the infected and bellowing rifle shots. Jumping into a Doom killing spree and there’s just as much joy to be gleaned from the fully loaded soundtrack as there is the squelch of demon brains, and picking out these hell-shrieks and roars in amongst the thrash of Mick Gordon’s heavy metal binge.

You’ll usually find these for about $170 / £150, which is still a lot to pay for a set of headphones without any kind of noise cancellation or isolation these days, and you’ll certainly notice it with the open back acoustic design. The lack of 7.1 Surround Sound also dampens your value for money considerably and, despite the excellent attention to open-world soundscapes, you’re still missing that pinpoint accuracy seen in other models available at this price.

Overall, then, if your niche is mainly single-player games combined with a desire for audio made by and for purists, then these might be for you – beyond that and we’d struggle to justify the price tag in today’s market.

EPOS GAME ONE Review

We had a panel of judges try out each headset for an extended period of time, rating the overall comfort of each product, as well as focusing specifically on the ear cups and the headband. Additionally, we also had testers that wore glasses try on each headset, to see if any unpleasant pressure points were created.

The ear cup padding is also covered in velvet and is a bit on the firmer side, but the vast majority of our judging panel was more than happy to wear the GAME ONE for extended periods of time — even for upwards of 10 hours.

We also liked that the open ear cup design kept you from getting overly sweaty when wearing them for long periods of time. This headset again delivered an excellent performance, earning an 8 out of 10 — although it couldn’t quite claim the top spot. Voice from other players comes across exceptionally loud and clear, though the deeper tones sounded slightly more muted.

This headset also does a great job when listening to the soundtracks or music, delivering well-balanced sound with only a slight emphasis on the mid-range tones. It has a slightly airy sound due to its open back, but provides an exceptionally immersive experience, especially when playing games with a rich, orchestral soundtrack. The GAME ONE didn’t do the best when the bass was boosted to the max, failing to display any parasitic buzz, instead actually rattling the headset around.

Only a few judges noticed a tiny amount of buzzing and one noted that the recorded voice sounded slightly flatter than it did in real life. For our final testing metric, accountable for 10% of the total score, we looked at how easy it is to actually use and operate each of these products. We based the score for each headset on the presence of onboard or in-line controls, the cord length and if it is detachable, and the convenience of using the microphone.

Additionally, you can also consider the— essentially the identical headset with a closed-back design, if you are too bothered by ambient noises while playing.

SENNHEISER Game One Gaming Headset Review – Latest in Tech

To open it up, just slide out the white cover sleeve, which will reveal the black box that holds all the items. Now moving on, find the latch at the bottom of the black box to reveal its contents. Inside, you will find a black foam mould that is integrated with the box that holds the headset and other items in place. There may be no instruction manual provided because you will find all the product information given on their official website.

Not only the headband is comfortable, but the earmuffs as well provide a snug fit with their pleasant ear padding. This makes it more relaxing and enjoyable when playing long gaming sessions as earmuffs tend to irritate the ears over time.

Besides the comfort it provides, the Game One headset also has an integrated microphone that is quick to read any vocal intonations when spoken to. This helps the user manually adjust their volume without having to exit the current game or application. Hi-Fi audio is short for high fidelity, and it refers to the reproduction of high-quality sound. The Game One headset also features an open design that is made to make the sound seem natural. It holds your head relaxed and ready for those intense and dragging gaming moments. Since we are on the topic of design and materials, the Game One headset provides a padded headband and plush earmuffs.

Other than its comfort, it was made with robust mechanics and selected materials to extend its durability. A transducer is a type of electronic device that turns sound into electrical signals and the other way around. Due to the headset containing original transducer technology, it makes it much more efficient and reliable.

The gaming headset is black in colour and features a headband wearing style.

For the tests, we want to see how well the Hi-Fi sounds go, its open acoustic headset and feel, and lastly the connections. Testing the audio proved simple by plugging the headset on to the computer and playing music. Here, we learned that the Game One headset offers quality in its sound display, the orientation of intonations and powerful bass and ambient effects. During gaming, we could easily hear every moment on the battlefield as the headset paid attention to these details.

It also covered our entire ear, which made it easier for us to hear the audio cleanly.

During the whole test session, we didn’t get stressed with the headset on as well as any sort of physical pain. We knew that EPOS|SENNHEISER would show up with a good product, but we didn’t expect one of the best gaming headsets to appear before us.
