How to avoid buying a fake power bank – Techjaja
Power banks are very essential to smartphone owners, when shopping for one in Uganda, you should be wary of fake products which have far less capacity than they claim on their packaging or could have a faulty battery that has potential to explode at anytime. There are many suspicious power banks listed for sale, usually having tags that depict very high capacities and surprisingly very affordable. In the western market, and many other countries, power bank manufacturers are required to print the device’s capacity in watt-hours (Wh) on their packaging in addition to mAh. Not only power banks, but smartphones and laptops also comply with this standard, listing Wh when stating battery capacity and never just mAh alone. To put thins in perspective, Watt-hours (Wh) is equal to amp-hours (Ah) multiplied by voltage (V). This figure will not change, no matter the voltage at which the mAh is calculated, as it reflects the number of hours the device can provide 1W of energy. Whether they have calculated their mAh using a voltage which is lower than the 3.7V or have simply misstated the capacity, it is important to beware of equating these devices with those labelled correctly. An original power bank like those made by Xiaomi called Mi support pass-through charging.

When that happens, you understand how essential a good power bank can be, especially if you’re on vacation or miles away from a convenient wall plug in the wild. Those internal batteries can be one of two types: Lithium-ion (usually listed as Li-Ion) or the less common lithium polymer (Li-Po).
Lithium-ion batteries were first developed in the early 1910s, and obviously they are still in common usage today — with several improvements to those first crude models. In general, they can’t pack the same amount of power into as small of a space as lithium-ion, and their ability to recharge can degrade slightly over time.
Mind you, looking at the type of battery you have won’t tell you how much energy your power bank can supply. If you have a power bank with a battery capacity of 10,000 mAh, it could charge up your phone five times without needing a recharge itself. That’s the number you’ll probably want as a minimum for your own power bank, provided you plan on charging multiple gadgets with it. You’ll see proprietary fast-charging tech like Qualcomm’s Quick Charge advertised for certain devices, but those numbers are the bottom line.
And bear in mind they may not be the rate at which your device actually charges: Speed is limited by the cable that you use to connect your phone or tablet to the power bank. Look for the input stats to get a sense of how fast it can get to a full charge when connected to a standard wall outlet. Some can use their batteries to power a flashlight in case of emergencies or will heat up just enough to become a makeshift pocket warmer in frigid weather. Those perks can make a lot of difference, and turn a forgotten backup device into a handy hiking buddy.

Romoss vs fake power banks – Tested
Last year, MyBroadband uncovered a number of fake capacity claims on power banks available from local retailers. There are a number of suspicious power banks listed for sale in South Africa, usually boasting very high capacities and surprisingly cheap price tags. In some cases, we needed to drain unlabelled 18650 lithium-ion cells found in the power banks to determine their capacity.
In Europe, the United States, and many other countries, power bank manufacturers are required to print the device’s capacity in watt-hours (Wh) on their packaging in addition to mAh.
Power banks in South Africa and a number of other countries prefer to use mAh, however, operating under the assumption of compliance to an industry standard of 3.7V for calculating capacity.

(48946 Views) Original 50,000MAH SONY Powerbank For Laptop / CHEAPEST PRICES ON PHONES/TABLETS/POWERBANK:GIONEE,XIAOMI,OPO,CUBETALK,JIAYU ETC / ROMOSS sense 6p 20,000mah POWER BANK, LCD FOR phone laptop via type-C #10,000 (2) (3) (4) As we know,a lot kind of powerbank sell in the market now, what we really care about is how much power the powerbank can charge our devices,I will introduce some simple way to check the real capacity. 1,For example: there is a powerbank named A,it’s said it has 10000mAh,and need charge 7hours from 0-100%,the input is 5V 1A(1A=1000mAh),do u know this is fake capacity or not?
Thanks for this info bro, I really commend your effort to educating us.But i don’t understand the maths you did. If your friends have Romoss or XiaoMi 10400mAh(real one,not fake),and the USB power adapter is 1A,the charge time from 0-100% is around 13 hours.why?
Now If Some people said he sell 12000mAh power bank, with 1A input, but only need 7hours.you can caculate it by yourself like following: Real capacity 12000mAh power bank need 16hours charge from 0-100%,but when you test, you find it only need 7hours.this is the fake capactiy.
Okay,My friend.1,Input means after you run out the power of your powerbank, now you need charge your powerbank from 0-100%(so tomorrow you can carry it with your smartphone)The input=1A, means your can put 1000mAh/hour in your power bank.but becuase of transfer lost(like you carry water from 1 bottle to another, there will be some water lost),the averager transfer lost is around 25-30%.
so means charge 700-750mAh/hour into your powerbank. If your friends have Romoss or XiaoMi 10400mAh(real one,not fake),and the USB power adapter is 1A,the charge time from 0-100% is around 13 hours.why?Becuase 10400mAh/750mAh=13.86 hours. You can confirm what I say by asking your friend. Now If Some people said he sell 12000mAh power bank, with 1A input, but only need 7hours.you can caculate it by yourself like following:12000mAh/750mAh=16hours. Real capacity 12000mAh power bank need 16hours charge from 0-100%,but when you test, you find it only need 7hours.this is the fake capactiy.Anything confuse, keep asking,we will answer everything we know.thanks.
