Fire 7 New 10 Inch Tablet Android 9.0

They bring a lot of value to the table and are perfect for those who simply want a reliable slate for consuming media and accessing the web. They may not be a great alternative to the best iPads or the best Android tablets out there, but budget shoppers will find plenty of value in one of these. You’ll come across more Fire tablet models while shopping on Amazon, but these are your primary options while others are slightly upgraded versions with some additional features. Mali-G72 MP3 Memory 2GB RAM Up to 3GB RAM Up to 4GB RAM Storage 16/32GB (microSD card up to 1TB) 32/64GB (microSD card up to 1TB) 32/64GB (microSD card up to 1TB) Audio Mono speaker Dual speakers with Dolby Atmos Dual speakers with Dolby Atmos Rear camera 2MP 2MP 5MP Front camera 2MP 2MP 2MP Battery Up to 10 hours

Looking at the specs table, it’s safe to say that the Fire HD 10 comes with a lot more bells and whistles compared to the other two tablets in the lineup. The Kids variant of each tablet comes with what Amazon calls a kid-proof case that’s designed to protect against drops and bumps. The Fire 7’s display also has the lowest resolution out of the three coming in at 1024 x 600 which equates to around 171 pixels per inch. Not only is the Fire HD 10’s display bigger than the other two tablets in this comparison, but it’s also the sharpest one in the lot for some crisp visuals.

The Fire HD 10 also has a small advantage in the memory department as it can be purchased with up to 4GB of RAM.

Amazon refrains from publicly sharing the battery specs for its Fire tablets.

Despite being the most affordable tablet in this comparison, the Fire 7 earns brownie points for running the latest software. It’s the only tablet in the lineup (so far) to run Amazon’s new Fire OS 8 which is based on Android 11.

The new OS, however, brings a lot of important changes including a system-wide dark mode, the latest security tweaks, and more. The Fire tablets are great for those who are heavily invested in Amazon products and services. It can show calendar appointments, news reports, smart home device controls, and more.

The Fire HD 10, in particular, also takes advantage of the split-screen function for better multi-tasking thanks to its bigger screen.

The Kids version of the tablets comes with one year of Amazon Kids+ subscription with thousands of ad-free books, games, videos, and more. They also get a parent dashboard to filter content based on the child’s age, educational goal, and more.

These features are in addition to the kids-proof case and the two-year guarantee with which you can replace a broken tablet for free. The new Amazon Fire 7 tablet will set you back $59 for the base variant with 16GB of storage.

The Fire HD 10 is the most expensive tablet in this comparison with a starting price of $205 for the base model without any ads. You’re better off spending the additional $10 to get the Fire HD 8 to take advantage of more storage and better display.

But if you don’t mind spending a good amount of money on a tablet for media consumption, then the Fire HD 10 is the clear winner.

Which Amazon Fire Tablet Is Best for You?

The prices seem too good to be true—and in some ways, they are—but Fire tablets are also completely functional, reasonably capable devices. While we list Amazon’s base price, note that we suggest you spend the extra $15 to get an ad-free version. Amazon refreshed it this year (7/10, WIRED Recommends) with a brighter screen and 3 gigabytes of RAM.

Alongside it, there’s a new Fire HD 10 Plus, which bumps the RAM to 4 GB and adds wireless charging, which is worth the extra $30 if you plan to do more than watch movies and browse the web.

Amazon is hoping you might do more too, as there’s now a “productivity bundle” that includes a nice keyboard (no trackpad though) and a 1-year subscription to Microsoft 365. The Fire HD 10 has a larger screen with more pixels (1080p) than its siblings, making it better for watching videos. The travel-friendly size, combined with a processor upgrade and a Plus model ($110) with 3 gigabytes of RAM and wireless charging, make the Fire HD 8 series nearly as capable as its larger sibling. That said, the screen is not quite as nice as the one on the larger Fire HD 10, which boasts a higher pixel density. I recommend picking up Amazon’s magnetic stand-up case if you plan on watching movies or TV, or, if you opt for the Plus model, the Wireless Charging Dock, which turns your tablet into an Echo Show speaker. The new Fire 7 Kids ($110) is an even cheaper option for young children, though mine have always found the 7-inch screen size more difficult to use. It also comes with one year of Amazon Kids+, offering access to kid-friendly movies, books, games, and apps. The 2022 version features a slightly more powerful processor, double the RAM, and longer battery life.

Older model Fire tablets won’t get software updates for as long as the current generation will.

(Update: Now Available) Amazon’s New Fire Tablets Run a Newer Outdated Android Version

While most people don’t worry about which version of Android their Fire tablet runs, it’s still crucial that Amazon keep up with the latest changes, features, and security enhancements. According to Amazon’s official Fire OS 8 release documents, tablet users can expect a slew of changes and new features.

Amazon has instructed developers to test and target their apps for Fire OS 8 to ensure the best experience and device compatibility, but that’s about all we know so far.

Acer, Asus, Lenovo, and Samsung used to deliver solid iPad competitors, but they’ve all slowed down their cadence to once every two years or so.

Android tablet manufacturers rarely use the latest version of the OS, and software upgrades are even less common. Speaking of Amazon, it and other large manufacturers like Samsung like to customize Google’s OS by adding a bevy of features, new app stores, and completely revamped user interfaces. Even if you don’t have the most recent OS iteration, Android continues to be the most configurable tablet operating system you’ll find. If you’re thinking of switching to a different carrier, be sure to check out LTE and 5G band support to ensure your tablet will work without any hiccups.
